What is a Sprinkler Fitter?

In almost every school, shopping centre, hospital, residential and office building, you can look up and expect to see a sprinkler system fixed to the ceiling - this is where a Sprinkler Fitter comes in

A Sprinkler Fitter is responsible for installing, inspecting, and repairing sprinkler systems. Duties typically include installing fixtures, fixing and replacing defective and outdated sprinklers, and soldering and welding pipes, tubes, and fittings designed for sprinklers. You are also expected to test sprinkler systems to ensure that they are working correctly as they wear over time.

**What can I expect to be doing as a Sprinkler Fitter apprentice?**

A Sprinkler Fitter apprenticeship takes 4 years to complete and includes a range of on-the-job and off-the-job training. Over the course of the apprenticeship, you will learn about different aspects of the job. This will help you build the necessary skills and knowledge to operate independently in the future.

**Through on-the-job and off-the-job training, you will learn to**:

- Fit domestic and residential safety sprinkler systems
- Test and maintain fire hydrant and hose reel systems
- Design pre-calculated fire sprinkler systems
- Work with small and large water services
- Install control valve systems
- Activate devices and local alarms and install special hazard systems

**During your apprenticeship, you may be trained and assessed in the following**:

- Read plans and calculate plumbing quantities
- Use plumbing hand and power tools
- Cut and join sheet metal
- Weld using oxy-acetylene equipment
- Set out and install water services
- Install portable fire equipment
- Fabricate and install fire hydrant and hose reel systems
- Test and maintain fire hydrant and hose reel installations
- Design pre-calculated fire sprinkler systems
- Conduct functional water flow testing
- Prevent ozone depleting substance and synthetic greenhouse gas emissions
