What is the role?
Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of the National Practice Manager within the AFP's Chief Counsel Portfolio (CCP).
The CCP is a dynamic, professional, diverse and interesting legal practice, underpinned by our commitment to AFP values and desire to foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
The CCP is comprised of the Chief Counsel Office, the AFP Legal Operations Team, the AFP Legal Corporate Team, the Criminal Assets Litigation (CAL) North Team and the CAL South Team. The portfolio is geographically dispersed across six capital cities. The Portfolio is managed by the Chief Counsel and each legal team is managed by a General Counsel.
The National Practice Manager (NPM) plays a central leadership role in the delivery of high-level legal practice management support services, working in close collaboration with the Chief Counsel, General Counsels and their offices. The role liaises with AFP senior executives and internal and external stakeholders, including the Attorney-General’s Department, providing accurate advice and reports on key strategic legal services and activities delivered by the CCP.
As a Team Leader you also play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual. Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, the expectation is that you will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
The responsibilities of the role are varied and dynamic, but generally include:
Providing leadership, management and direction to both AFP Legal and CAL teams by coordinating practice management services, including governance, standard operating procedures, training, legal reporting, finance and human resource services and ensuring compliance and best practice in all these areas.
Leading and coordinating the production of professional and high-quality products relating to legal services and business activities within the portfolio including:
reporting on matters concerning the performance and delivery of legal services under the Commonwealth’s Legal Services Directions 2017;
preparing and reviewing briefs on significant issues relating to the CCP for various stakeholders, including the Attorney-General’s Department Office of Legal Services Coordination (OLSC), the AFP Executive and Parliament;
coordinating and responding to external requests in relation to the policies, procedures or functions of the CCP; and
representing the CCP in government forums (such as the Commonwealth Legal Practice Manager’s Forum) and government working groups.
Undertaking research and analysis of strategic legal and corporate issues affecting the CCP and the AFP more broadly and proactively reporting on and addressing these matters.
Supporting the legal teams and relevant internal AFP portfolios to formulate, manage and administer the CCP supplier, employee, capital and centralised training budgets (including ensuring legal finance reporting to the OLSC is accurate and timely).
Managing the completion of tasks allocated from and within Chief Counsel’s office and/or sent to the legal teams.
