The Research Fellow will be responsible for establishing, coordinating, and managing a principal testimonies survey and website which are part of the ARC Discovery research project, ‘Invisible labour: Principals’ emotional labour in volatile times. This three-year project partially funded by the ARC (2023-2025), involves researchers from Monash University, Deakin University and University of Sydney, a 0.6 research fellow based at Monash and an expert reference group. Through broad and in-depth methods of research, this qualitative study will investigate the intensified emotional management work of public-school principals, including the heightened social volatilities in which it is manifested and experienced. The survey and website which the research fellow will be responsible for coordinating and managing involves public school principals across Australia contributing a short anonymous testimony (written/audio) to a national survey that will run throughout the life of the project. They will be asked to post about a critical incident that has occurred under their leadership in relation to stakeholder groups and reflect on the emotional impact it has had on them as principals.
The Research Fellow is expected to coordinate and administer the principals’ testimonial survey and website, a crucial aspect of this ARC project in the field of educational leadership and the emotional labour of principals. This survey will be conducted in Year 1. A subsequent website will be established which will feature short excerpts from selected principals’ testimonies, stripped of identifying details and with participants’ permission. These will be added to throughout the life of the project. The research fellow will conduct activities to develop their research expertise relevant to the study of the emotional labour of principals managing diverse school communities. The Research Fellow will be expected to make, in collaboration with the project team, original contributions to research in the field of educational leadership and principal workforce development and to the inter-disciplinary area of education for social justice and equity.

- Qualifications and experience_
- PhD in a relevant discipline and/or other relevant qualifications and experience (preferably in sociology of education or another relevant education/social sciences discipline)
- Emerging reputation in research and scholarship through publications
- Ability to contribute to communities through research
- Capacity to contribute to leadership of research and administration
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues
- Knowledge and Skills_
- In-depth understanding of, and interest in educational leadership
- In-depth understanding of Australian education policy and practice, particularly in principal development
- Research skills, with experience in conducting literature searches, preparing research summaries and systems for managing research
- Experience in design and conduct of qualitative methods research techniques, research synthesis and qualitative data analysis
- Research capacity commensurate with opportunity
- Understanding of and experience in higher education research ethics protocols
- Strong record of engagement activities in the relevant discipline area, including conference papers, reports and/or professional and/or technical contributions and events
- Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with co-researchers, multiple industry stakeholders and research participants
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially in English-language academic writing, including the ability to prepare and communicate the aims and outputs of research projects in a range of formats for varied audiences
