Responsibilities will include:
- Timely retrieval and receipting of samples from delivery points within HMRI or John Hunter NSW Pathology Laboratory
- Efficient, reproducible processing of samples according to project-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Cataloguing and secure storage of samples while maintaining specimen inventory accuracy.
- DNA and RNA extraction, including the ‘work-up’ of new research protocols
- Inputting and maintaining detailed records in the OpenSpecimen Database, ensuring data privacy and confidentiality.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, conduct routine equipment maintenance, and report any issues promptly.
- Engage in mandatory training and contribute to team operations as needed.
This fixed term position is part time - full time (4-5 days per week pending consultation) at a HEW 5 Higher Education Level located at HMRI - John Hunter Hospital New Lambton Heights

**About the Unit**
With the generous foundational support of NSW Health Pathology, Hunter Cancer Research Alliance/Cancer Institute of NSW, the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute, HCB has expanded rapidly and now partners not only with cancer researchers, but with a wide array of research disciplines including gastrointestinal disease, reproductive science, dietetics, endocrinology, respiratory disease, neurological disease, mental health and environmental science.
Following a period of rapid growth, including an expansion of the platform to serve as a dynamic facilitator of multi-centre clinical trials, and recognition of the ongoing need for a regional biobanking facility, HCB transitioned to a multi-disciplinary biospecimen program - NSW Regional Biospecimen and Research Services. NSW Regional Biospecimen and Research Services recognises the unique needs and opportunities of the regional research community. **Essential**
- Completion of a degree without subsequent relevant work experience; or completion of an associate diploma and at least 2 years subsequent relevant work experience; or completion of a Pathology Technician’s Certificate and extensive relevant experience as a technician; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience in processing blood, bone marrow and/or tissues in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team to effectively manage workflow and priorities
- Ability to adhere to established Standard Operating Procedures and willingness to handle infectious material (according to WH&S requirements).
- Demonstrated experience in dealing with private and confidential information.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of, and experience in adhering to workplace policies and procedures in the areas of work health safety, equity, diversity and promoting a respectful workplace culture.
