Teacher Music

**Position Information**:
Oak Flats High School is located on the land of the Wodi Wodi people of the Dharawal Nation, on the shoreline of Lake Illawarra on the South Coast of NSW. We have an enrolment of 675 students.

Our school is a diverse learning community with 14% of students identifying as Aboriginal, and 10% of students having a language background other than English, which includes 18 languages. We also have seven classes for students on the Autism spectrum and three classes for students with mental health issues. The diversity of our school ensures a rich learning environment in which students can develop empathy and understanding for all people. Catering for and celebrating this diversity is part of our commitment to ensuring every student is known, valued and cared for.

The 2021-2024 Strategic Improvement Plan priorities are focused on Aboriginal education, improvement of HSC results, improved literacy and numeracy, high expectations for learning culture and behaviour, and building belonging and aspirations. All staff are actively engaged in the implementation of projects and strategies to improve our practise in these key areas.

Our school is part of the Lake Illawarra South Network, and with our partner primary schools we form the Oak Flats Learning Community. We have a comprehensive transition program commencing in Stage 2, which was recently recognised with the Executive Director’s Award for Innovation. We have a shared senior curriculum program with Lake Illawarra High School to ensure both schools can offer a broad range of courses to our senior students.

**Selection Criteria**:

- Approval and capacity to successfully teach Music and Music Extensions 1 & 2. Approval to deliver VET entertainment industry, or meet the requirements as indicated in the special notes (see below).
- Understanding of and ability to cater for a diverse range of learning abilities, including the cultural and educational needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and a demonstrated commitment to improving students' educational outcomes.
- Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with an experienced faculty to develop, implement and evaluate high-quality teaching and learning programs, lessons and assessments that differentiate the curriculum and engage students to foster a culture of high expectations.
- A demonstrated ability to develop extracurricular programs and events that provide real-world experiences for students, both internal and external through engagement with community events.

**About the NSW Department of Education**

Teachers from all key learning areas with recent and relevant industry experience and/or qualifications can seek entry to the VET Entertainment Industry teacher training program through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Applications must be supported by primary documented evidence of recent and relevant industry experience and/or qualifications mapped against the competencies to be delivered in schools. Application for RPL is made to and reviewed only by the Application Review Committee (ARC).
