The Salvation Army ‘Doorways to Parenting Program’ is a social program within Salvation Army to supports families in a holistic manner. This is a Tasmania based program operating in the North-West, North and South.
The Doorways to Parenting Programs supports parents/caregivers by facilitating evidence-based parenting programs, intensive case work, running community based and Supervised Access Playgroups.
Primary a frontline role, The Doorways to Parenting Playgroup Assistant plays an important role in supporting the Doorways to Parenting Team to facilitate two community-based playgroups on North Tasmania. The playgroups have specific themes and events that provide a structured experience to further support and develop children’s emotional security and increase opportunities for physical health, wellbeing and community connection. Examples of past events and themes include the following: Harmony Day, Earth Day, Dental Health Week, Book Week, National Reconciliation Day, Science Week and Children’s Week.
This role involves different components including setting up/packing down the room, connecting and supporting local families with young children. These families be experiencing external issues and or rely on our community playgroups as a form of social connection and support.
There are two community-based locations which run from 10-12pm.
- Summerhill Baptist Church-Wednesday
- Punchbowl Christian Centre
- Friday
Key tasks and responsibilities
Set up/Pack down
- Set up and pack down the playgroup in conjunction with the staff member.
- Safety check of equipment prior to pack down.
- Assist with cleaning
Support Parents in Supervising their Children.
- Ensure safety of children
- Ensure adequate supervision is given if a parent is otherwise occupied with their other children etc.
Support Case Worker and Lead Practitioner
- Responsible for supporting the staff and following their directions.
Provide Social Support to Parents
- Creating a warm, friendly, and inclusive environment by engaging families in social interactions.
- Adhering to privacy and confidentiality guidelines for any information discussed in playgroup.
- Inform staff of any parent queries/needs/concerns.
Qualifications and skills (desired/required)
- Desirable previous experience for working with children.
- Essential for role is an interest in meeting new people, bringing sensitivity and empathy in all interactions.
