**Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA)**

The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA’s activities draw together academic research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and a key participant in the international SKA project.

CIRA is also the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR). Established in 2009, ICRAR is one of the largest and most enduring academic research initiatives in Western Australia. Consistent performance and impact across science, engineering, and data and computing, has earned ICRAR a place among the world’s premier multi-disciplinary astronomy research organisations.

**Your new role**

The successful applicant will work with existing team members to develop a research program leveraging these new, large data sets (including LSST) to identify and follow up accreting compact objects, particularly those classes detailed above. They will also be expected to contribute toward student supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and engage in appropriate teaching or service-related activities both within CIRA and the broader University.

**Essential Criteria**:

- Progress towards a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. radio astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or computer science).
- A track record of high-quality research outputs in astrophysics or a closely related field, which is commensurate with career stage.
- Demonstrated competency in quantitative and qualitative research skills in astrophysics, such as experiment design, data analysis, modelling, or interpretation.
- Clearly demonstrated high-level communication skills, in both oral and written form.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a research team, and a commitment to fostering a collegial and supportive working environment.
- Demonstrated experience or interest in supervising Higher Degree by Research students.
- Interest in or experience in undergraduate teaching in physics, astronomy, statistics, computing, or a closely related field.
- Commitment to principles of equity and diversity and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.

**Desirable Criteria**:

- A doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. radio astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or computer science).
- Experience working with large astronomical surveys or data sets.
- Experience with or skills relevant to the Vera Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).
- Demonstrated familiarity with the fields of astronomical transients, accretion, or jet physics.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver effective undergraduate teaching, including a commitment to reflective improvement in teaching practice.
