**The company**
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), designs and operates a sustainable energy system that provides safe, reliable and affordable electricity and gas today, and to enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. All Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050, the first step of which is a net-zero energy system. AEMO are collaborating with industry and other stakeholders to engineer electricity grids that can handle 100% instantaneous renewable generation by 2025. AEMO also plays a significant role in the east coast gas market, which has recently expanded to assessing if there is enough natural gas for customers, including electricity generators. Australia’s transition to a renewable energy system is occurring at a world-leading pace. It is an exciting, momentous time to be part of this mission.
**The role**
Reporting to the EGM Government & Stakeholder, the General Manager (GM) Stakeholder Engagement will lead the Stakeholder Engagement function to spearhead engagement with AEMO’s industry, consumer and community stakeholders. The GM will provide team oversight, leadership and management with a strong focus on development, execution and delivery of the Division’s Stakeholder Engagement Strategy and Framework and promotion of effective stakeholder engagement across AEMO.
The role provides leadership and management to the Stakeholder Engagement team and is responsible for building, developing and managing a high-performing and diverse team that works effectively with stakeholders to deliver AEMO, and the energy industries priorities. The GM Stakeholder Engagement will work closely with the GM Communications and GM Government Relations to drive culture change and collaboration within the Team, and across the Division and Organisation, to deliver on the Division’s purpose to be a trusted conduit shaping energy outcomes.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and embed governance and stakeholder engagement tools across the organisation.
- Measure effectiveness of industry stakeholder engagement AEMO wide via formal and informal feedback channels and methods.
- Build and drive an effective AEMO-wide Stakeholder Engagement Community of Practice, sharing stakeholder insights, challenges, trends with the Team and wider business, including AEMO Services, to drive improvements.
- Develop and implement the Division’s Stakeholder Engagement Strategy as well as proactively update it based on changing stakeholder landscape.
- Liaise with other areas of AEMO regarding insights/actions that are relevant to stakeholders, and feed insights back to the Team, Division and broader Community of Practice.
- Oversee AEMO’s engagement and advocacy with external stakeholders, including gas and electricity generators, retailers, network companies, developers, advocacy groups and consumers.
- Work with business units to determine AEMO’s position on specific issues, and market and policy reviews, to present an aligned view with external stakeholders.
**About you**
You are a strategic leader and someone who enjoys engaging with industry, government and community stakeholders to facilitate strong and ongoing collaboration and enable successful energy transformation outcomes as Australia moves to net zero.
To be successful in this role you will hold IAP2 and relevant tertiary qualifications (Bachelor or Masters) in social sciences, communications, public relations or a related field.
Additionally, you will have:
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in a small to medium sized organisation and experience in complex infrastructure/service delivery organisations.
- Deep understanding of, and experience within, the energy sector.
- Experience building, leading and developing high performing teams in a matrixed and issues rich organisation.
- Significant strategic stakeholder and community engagement experience including the development of strategic priorities, an organisational stakeholder and community engagement strategy, and crisis and issues management.
- Demonstrated experience in establishing and managing complex consultative processes, with a large number of diverse interests, to meet agreed outcomes.
- Demonstrated strategic communication and interpersonal skills and experience in giving presentations, chairing/facilitating meetings, and the production of effective written communications such as briefings, papers, stakeholder communications, publications, submissions and presentations to ELT and Board.
- Understanding of, and familiarity with, the role of government in the transition of the energy sector.
- Demonstrated ability to assimilate a sufficient understanding of electricity and gas market operations to lead stakeholder consultation processes on complex technical, commercial or regulatory issues.
