**Animal Attendent (Melton City Council)**
**11/12/17 - 31/01/18 $32.38 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Sunday**
This person will need to be available to work on a roster and must be available to work weekends. Weekend hours are Saturday and Sunday 8.00 to 11am. Overtime may also become available when needed during peak times.
This position is for the purpose of attending to the domestic animals. Feeding, cleaning of pens and cages and moving and exercising animals around the Pound
1. POSITION OBJECTIVE(S)
To assist the Pound Operations Officer in the day to day running of the pound to ensure impounded animals are treated and cared for in accordance with relevant legislation, code of practice and Council’s policies and procedures.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS
Daily feeding, watering and inspections of all animals.
Daily cleaning of animals housing areas; e.g. hose out pens, replace bedding, litter trays, feeding and watering utensils.
Administering medication and treatment as prescribed by a veterinary practitioner.
Conduct routine disinfection of animal housing areas and equipment.
Exercising of animals as required or directed.
Monitoring of food and chemical supplies and advice supervisor of any requirements.
Report any building maintenance or safety issues to supervisor.
Report any change in behaviour in an animal or medical conditions to the supervisor
Adhere to all relevant legislation, codes of practice, policies and procedures at all times.
Assist supervisor with releases, adoptions and fostering processes.

4. ACCOUNTABILITY & EXTENT OF AUTHORITY
Operate under the supervision of Domestic Animal Facility (Pound) Operations Officer and offer support to the Compliance Support unit.
Adhere to legislative requirements, codes of practice, policies, procedures and the content of the position description and the nature of the work assigned to the position from time to time.
Assist in providing information to members of the public, Council staff and members of Local Laws unit.
5. JUDGEMENT & DECISION MAKING
Guidance is always available within the organisation from Domestic Animal Facility (Pound) Operations Officer, Compliance Support Staff and City Amenity & Compliance Staff.
Physical and behavioural assessment is to be carried out on all animals and recommendations made to the Domestic Animal Facility (Pound) Operations Officer in accordance with current legislation and code of practice.
6. SPECIALIST SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrated skills in handling domestic animals, using animal handling equipment including dog control devices and knowledge of the care of the animals.
Knowledge of cleaning and feeding procedures in relation to care of domestic animals.
Basic computer skills to update animal records
Working knowledge of the processes and practices required to operate a pound or similar facility.
7. MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Plan to achieve daily objectives and priorities and ability to plan own workload.
Ability to work effectively as a member of the Local Laws unit to achieve work unit objectives.
8. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Ability to listen, interpret, and follow code of practice, guidelines and instructions as required.Ability to display a sense of compassion, empathy and understanding linking to animal ownership.
Possess good skills in oral and written communication.
Ability and confidence in relaying information to customers and the Local Laws unit.
9. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Minimum year 10 secondary schooling or equivalent.
Possess a good understanding of domestic animal behaviour and husbandry practices.
Have experience relating to the care, cleaning, feeding and hygiene of domestic animals.
Possess good communication, customer service and general administration skills.
Willingness to handle impounded domestic animals.
10. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Demonstrated understanding of domestic animal behaviour and husbandry practices.
Demonstrated good communication and general administration skills.
Industry related experience in a field of employment working with domestic animals.
Experience in customer service.
Current Victorian Driver’s Licence.
