**What you'll be doing**

The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator (Navigator) will ensure the treatment journey for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing mental health services across ISLHD is holistic, culturally safe, trauma informed, and evidenced based.

The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will support mental health teams in the development of culturally informed assessment, treatment, transfer and discharging planning and ensuring the social, cultural and historical contexts are at the forefront of services offered. The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will ensure services build on the strengths, resources and knowledge of Aboriginal consumers their families and /or carers.

The Navigator will work closely with the Mental Health Workforce to ensure that Aboriginal people accessing mental health services feel culturally safe and empowered in making decisions in regard to their health.

The Navigator will carry a clinical caseload, as appropriate to the needs of consumers.

**This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only in accordance with Clause 26 of the Government Sector Employment Rules 2014, applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the selection criterion.**

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed an up-to-date course of a COVID-19 vaccine (3 doses for Category A roles, 2 doses for Category B roles) which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Please provide proof of vaccination if available.

Successful applicants to the role must provide certified documentation of vaccination history and pathology as part of their recruitment documentation. The applicant must be certified as compliant with Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases before employment can commence.

**Selection Criteria**
- Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW) and have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with established links with the local Aboriginal communities.
- Tertiary qualification Bachelor Health Science (Mental Health), or qualifications and current registration with AHPRA for Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, or eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers for Social Workers.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; with experience in mental health and/or social emotional, spiritual wellbeing of Aboriginal people and their communities.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high quality, culturally safe and connected care to consumers and their families and carers in a person-centred and holistic manner that promotes self-determination and in context of the principles of trauma informed practices, recovery framework and a strength based approach.
- Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and practice of consumers' families and natural supports participating within the treatment process, as appropriate and in accordance with the NSW Mental Health Act 2007.
- Effective interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and personal resilience, including its use in leadership and clinical supervision, within a multi-disciplinary treatment setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including Computer literacy and understanding of relevant health related information systems.
