At CSIRO Agriculture and Food our research from gene to plate increases productivity and efficiencies at the farm level, improves the quality and yield of Australian crops, develops innovative food processing technologies, creates new value-added foods, and is growing the nation’s livestock, aquaculture and fishery industries.
As Research Project Officer, you will be part of the Soil and Landscapes Group located in Canberra and participate in field soil and biophysical sampling, processing of collated soil samples including usage of field instruments, perform soil chemical and physical laboratory analysis, data entry and QA&QC of the gathered datasets within the Soil Process and Function Team and wider Soil and Landscapes Group.
This job is offered Specified Term of 3 years, with possibility of conversion to indefinite.
**Your duties will include**:
- Accurately collate soil samples, handle datasets, laboratory, field, and instrumentation
- Knowledge or willingness to learn data processing and contribute to research and/or technology through the development of original and adapted experimental methods.
- Under general direction, undertake national, regional and farm scale soil state and trend assessments which required require field work in Australia and international locations.
- Willingness to learn and use rapid and cost-effective proximal tools as well as soil physical analytical methods to support functional understanding of the agro-ecosystem.
- Participate in the identification and definition of research and/or technological problems with colleagues and develop solutions.
- Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for their satisfaction.
- Address problems promptly and in a constructive manner.
- Make contributions to the interpretation and communication of research or technological results and may collaborate on drafting presentations to, and/or detailed written reports for, clients and the scientific and/or technology community.
- Communicate openly, effectively, and respectfully with all staff, clients, and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration, and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.

**Salary**: AU$89,680 - AU$101,459 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

**To be considered you will need**:
**Essential**:
- Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed._
- Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of qualification and demonstrated relevant work experience in soil science, agricultural science - engineering, environmental science environmental engineering, or similar fields of science.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in implementing field-based research aimed at quantifying the state and function of soils across spatially variable landscapes including participating in field data collection campaigns.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in the measurement of soil physical and chemical properties, including the use and maintenance of field and laboratory equipment.
- Ability to accurately measure, record and analyse datasets including in field and laboratory conditions. This should include soil data analysis, including a sound understanding of FAIR data principles, data management and version control, and including statistics.
- Availability to travel and work in remote locations including international travel.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary or regionally dispersed research team, and the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous work components.
- A current Australian driver’s licence.
**Desirable**:
- Demonstrated practical knowledge of Australian landscapes and soils, their constraints, and opportunities.
- Demonstrated programming skills in one or more scientific coding languages including (but not limited to) Python and R.
- Experience maintenance and operation of laboratory instrumentation including soil physics instrumentation, soil carbon analysers and infrared spectrophotometers
- All-terrain vehicles, 4WD, heavy vehicle licence
