**Position Title**: Gardener

**Reporting to**:Chief Operating Officer

**Base Salary per annum**: $70,000 Plus 11% superannuation

**Employment Basis**: Full Time

**Guaranteed Hours**: 38 hours per week

**Location**: 44- 46 Mounts Bay Rd, Crawley WA 6009

**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**
St George's College, founded in 1931, is the premier residential college at The University of Western Australia. It has approximately 270 residents, evenly divided between men and women, who all study undergraduate or postgraduate courses at Perth Universities.

This position as Gardener will be responsible for the general maintenance and development of College gardens, creating a garden environment that is enjoyable, safe, and secure for the staff, students, and visitors.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Carrying out a varied range of gardening duties, requiring a minimum amount of supervision and use of own initiative
- Soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, litter and debris clearing, edging, pruning, seed sowing, bed preparation and planting.
- Raising seedlings.
- Propagating and variegating plants, including trees, flowers, shrubs, bushes, and hedges.
- Watering, fertilising, and treating soil.
- Pruning hedges, shrubs, and trees, and lopping branches where necessary.
- Lawn maintenance and cultivation, such as mowing lawns and trimming or weeding garden beds.
- Spraying and treating plants to control disease or insects.
- Examining plants and trees to determine their condition and decide appropriate treatment.
- Choosing plants and materials for gardens.
- Setting out and shaping pathways from gravel or pebbles.
- The use of a wide range of hand tools, horticultural machinery, and powered hand tools, such as lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge cutters, etc
- Ensuring that all tools, garden equipment, and machinery are correctly maintained and serviced and that they are kept in good and safe working order.
- Assisting with the construction of raised beds
- Awareness and practicing of Health and Safety legislations, ensuring a safe working environment for everyone working or using the garden.
- Keeping the company van and tool sheds clean and tidy and tools always stored securely.
- Undergo training as required.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Minimum Certificate III level qualifications or equivalent with 2 years mandatory work experience in a similar position. In the absence of formal qualifications, 3 years of work experience in a similar position will suffice.

**SKILLS / PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES**
- Ability to handle a range of gardening machinery and powered hand tools.
- In-depth knowledge of plants and gardening techniques.
- Friendly personality with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Solid understanding of health and safety rules
