Our clients are a fifth-generation family farming business who are well respected and progressive, with an industry leading continuous cropping operation run over 6,500 hectares across eleven properties in a 60km radius on central Yorke Peninsula. The properties are located from the east side of the Yorke Peninsula at Ardrossan to Maitland in the centre and through to Port Victoria on the west side of the Peninsula. The cropping program consists of 40% wheat, 20% barley and 40% lentils with The Yorke Peninsula’s cool, coastal climate being very mild in the spring which is ideal for producing high-quality grain.

Operating in some lower rainfall areas that were traditionally considered too dry for cropping, the business has thrived by being one of the early adopters of precision cropping technology, using the latest modern plant and equipment in a reduced tillage system. Continual progression and improvement are key drivers for the business, and they have seen huge improvements in soil health, fertility and productivity allowing them to expand their operations significantly over the past 20 years. Another cornerstone of the business is the adoption of high-level planning and risk management with an Advisory Board, benchmarking, advanced staff training and workplace safety planning.

Our clients are excited to establish the role of Operations Manager who will be responsible to ensure professional & timely delivery of the cropping operations. The appointed Operations Manager will need to understand the key drivers for profitability and improvement in a cropping enterprise whilst ensuring the team always remains cohesive to the common goal. You will oversee the day-to-day operations with the support of the owners, the Cropping Manager and the existing team of staff which includes 5 other permanent staff and 2-3 casuals during peak times. Strong communication skills are essential to mentor and lead the cropping team, work closely with the owners, and liaise with consultants, suppliers, and agronomists on a regular basis.

This is a challenging position with opportunities to focus in areas that complement the individual’s professional skillset while integrating hands-on machinery-based cropping work throughout the season. The position will at times have high levels of autonomy within the role and there will be an opportunity to work with the owners on future improvement in discovering new and better ways to farm with new technology and strategies.

The key responsibilities and duties include:

- Operate a range of modern, large-scale broadacre farming equipment through key seasonal events (e.g., seeding, spraying, and harvest), utilising precision agriculture technologies
- Assist in crop production decisions and implement agronomic practices and management advice
- Undertake the seeding and harvest operations, including moisture management, depth of sowing, and timeliness of operations around upcoming weather conditions
- General property maintenance and repairs
- Regular communication with property owners
- Record keeping of spraying, planting, and harvest logistics

The position may include:

- Managing the day-to-day operations of the business including the planning & scheduling of day-to-day tasks for all staff members.
- Working closely with our Cropping Manager to ensure productive workflow is maintained during the year and management of HR, training and development program.
- Assisting in the negotiation of the purchase of machinery, vehicles and farm inputs.
- Assist with planning and the management of the finance & budgeting.
- Managing the traditional benchmarking process and data systems, working in conjunction with the agronomist and the Cropping Manager determine the year-by-year profit and or loss for individual enterprises.
- Participate & report to the business’ Advisory Board twice a year
- Assisting with the grain marketing & hedging program in conjunction with traditional consultant network.
- The option to manage any ongoing infrastructure projects, for example, on-farm storage, sheds, new office.
- Facilitate regular staff meetings.
