Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

**Job Description**:

- Reporting to the Head of Technical, the General Manager: Sustainable Development will enable the CEO and executive leadership team to ensure the long-term sustainability of Steelmaking Coal including through shaping the business’ approach and plans to achieve Anglo American’s Sustainable Mining Plan environmental targets.

This role will facilitate the strategic perspective on contemporary Sustainable Development (SD) as well as senior technical expertise to be more readily provided to the executive leadership team in shaping the Company’s sustainability agenda in Australia. The role also will ensure the effective and efficient delivery of permitting requirements and will be involved with other ExCo members in external policy development in this area.

- Anticipate future needs and opportunities from the external environment relating to Sustainable Development
- Develop a comprehensive view across a range of different aspects ‐environmental, technological, legislative and competitor, for the SD agenda
- Provide strategic guidance and advice to ensure environment management complies with legislative requirements
- With other ExCo members, establish the SD agenda across Steelmaking Coal, including coordinating and defining the sustainable development budget requirements across the business unit
- Translate, review, and coordinate the Group SD strategy, policy and standards across Steelmaking Coal
- Creating and Leading SD Function _
- Strategic leadership of the Sustainable Development function, including the focal point at ExCo for change required to achieve a new way of doing business.
- Raise the profile of the SD agenda at senior leadership teams. Influence to ensure equal prioritisation of SD activities with other strategic pillars of the business.
- Define and provide a centralised shared services model into sites
- Define and administer governance and decision-making processes for SD for Steelmaking Coal and sites, covering all stakeholders and levels of SD activity, including Group SD
- Influence site GMs and leadership teams on the SD agenda, directly and through SD leaders on site
- Engage direct site level stakeholders to ensure operational compliance. Integration of SD into the planning and management of site-based work
- Coordination of culture, leadership and behaviours to align to the SMP and Anglo American’s SD agenda more broadly
- Manage continuous improvement and knowledge sharing regarding SD across all of Steelmaking Coal operations
- Engagement and management of key SD stakeholders specific to Steelmaking Coal. E.g., industry bodies, regulators, NGOs.
- Sustainable Mining Plan Leadership _
- Translate the Group SMP requirements with Steelmaking Coal stakeholders to generate and coordinate the development of the detailed SMP technical implications for operations and integrate into the business planning process (IPP).
- Act as the single point of contact for Group and Steelmaking Coal for the SMP on governance matters. Builds awareness of change required driven by SMP 2.0
- In collaboration with business functional leads and sites, develop and maintain an integrated SMP implementation plan for Steelmaking Coal that delivers on the agreed targets
- Lead and manage Group SMP goals in the environmental area for the business and provide support/advice and coaching for sites to achieve these.
- Work with SMC ExCo to ensure adequate budgets and resources are made available to deliver on the SMP targets for Steelmaking Coal
- Ensure consistent implementation across operations and central teams of key SMP/environmental projects and help drive continuous improvement of the SD agenda in Steelmaking Coal Operations
- Facilitate reporting information to Group on overall Steelmaking Coal progress to SMP targets to provide line of sight between sites, ExCo and Group
- Provide regular updates to both ExCo and Group on any key decisions or support required
- Senior Technical Leadership for SD Performance and Compliance _
- Provide strong technical/functional understanding and leadership on ESG implications of how Steelmaking Coal needs to operate now and in the future.
