The Australian Alliance for Indigenous Genomics (ALIGN) is an MRFF-funded initiative aimed at enhancing Indigenous leadership in genomics, research, and healthcare to address the disparities experienced by Australia’s First Peoples. ALIGN is a national partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, and communities, clinical services and researchers. The South Australian node of ALIGN is led by researchers based in the Aboriginal Health Equity Unit (Wardliparingga) at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and at the South Australian Genomics Centre (SAGC), a national genomics facility also based at SAHMRI.

SAGC - in conjunction with ALIGN and Wardliparingga - are seeking expressions of interest from Indigenous students, researchers or professionals to participate in a 10-12-week paid internship in genomics. The internship can be tailored to your specific research interests and there is flexibility around when the internship occurs and whether the internship is full or part time. The internship will provide opportunities: for hands-on lab training in genomics; to learn how genomic sequencing is conducted; to conduct a small genomics project; and to expand your knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal health research in SA.
- Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- Be an undergraduate or postgraduate student, professional or researcher looking for practical placement experience in genomics.
- Have a background in biology, genetics, biotechnology, health and medical sciences or another relevant discipline and want to expand their knowledge in Indigenous genomics.
- Prior experience working in a laboratory environment would be an asset.
- Be available to undertake the placement
