The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitable applicantsfor Registrar and Fellow vacancies in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
The RHH Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine (DDHM) is fully accredited for ANZCA Advanced Certificate of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine training, subject to the applicant meeting ANZCA requirements. The positions are also accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for advanced training as a Special Skills Category A term, and are approved by the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society for the SPUMS Diploma of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine.
All applicants must be fit to dive as per AS/NZS 2299.1 or AS/NZS 4774.2.
The SPUMS Diploma is suitable for registrars at any level of training.
The ANZCA Advanced Certificate program requires candidates to be in their Fellowship year or Post-Fellowship.
Applications can be accepted from Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, General Practice, Rural & Remote Medicine, or other training programs.
The DDHM is the State referral centre for diving emergencies and is the only medical recompression facility in Tasmania. The facility recently entered an exciting new phase, moving into a world class dual-function, triple-lock, multiplace Hyperbaric/Hypobaric chamber complex in the new RHH redevelopment – which is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tasmania has a population of approximately 25,000 active divers of which 2,000 are professional divers. The hyperbaric facility conducts over 2,000 patient treatments annually and manages approximately 20-30 cases of decompression illness and 60-80 acute non-decompression emergencies. The RHH hyperbaric facility has full critical care capability.
Hyperbaric medical, nursing and technical staff are involved in a number of international collaborative research projects and multi-centre randomised trials and will provide support to successful applicants in undertaking research projects. Protected time is provided for teaching and attendance at specialty training programs in addition to support to attend the short course in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine held each year at either the Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth or HMAS Penguin in Sydney.
Specialists at the DDHM have close links with Tasmanian professional diving industries. There are opportunities for field visits to professional and offshore diving operations whilst working at the facility.
