About The Project

John Holland has been named as the preferred contractor to deliver the North-East Link, Hoddle St to Bourke Road package of works. The scope includes upgrading six kilometres of the Freeway with new traffic lanes, bridge upgrades and urban noise walls, a dedicated busway (fully segregated from mainline traffic), and a new bridge over the Yarra River. The NEL Project involves design and construction of the upgrade of the Eastern Freeway from Hoddle Street in the West to Burke Road in the East, including 6km of brownfield freeway widening, 3km dedicated busway, significant structures including bridges, ITS, retaining walls, stormwater drainage, noise walls, lighting and signage.

About The Role

Plan and manage the end to end commercial management of large subcontracts and self-performed works, both directly and indirectly. Work effectively with internal and external stakeholders and direct reports to deliver project commercial outcomes. All employees contribute to the health, safety, environmental & quality management program and adhere to the Projects core safety and environmental values.

What you will do
  • Participate in scope of works planning, minimise scope gaps, maximise cost efficiencies and consider subcontractor capabilities.
  • Prepare procurement strategies, including breakdown into works packages, identification of potential subcontractors, procurement methods and timing.
  • Provide management and leadership to other commercial roles, including direct reports.
  • Maintain contact and good working relationships with subcontractors and stay aware of market conditions.
  • Assess commercial and contractual risks, implement controls and escalate issues to the Commercial Manager or Project Manager as needed.
  • Ensure cost forecasting for allocated subcontracts and cost codes is maintained and escalated when issues arise.
  • Effectively manage subcontracts through all phases: scope preparation, procurement, cost forecasting, subcontractor management, claims/variations processing, completion and close out.
  • Operate and maintain commercial and contract systems including Project Costs Reporting (PCR), Asset Registers, Commercial pack and Contract Sum.
  • Ensure compliance with Building Code at all times and report potential non-compliances.
  • Prepare reporting on commercial performance periodically and as required.
  • Assist with Head Contract administration where required.
What we are looking for
  • Qualifications: Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Economics, Quantity Surveying, Law, Commerce or equivalent. Post graduate qualifications are desirable.
  • Experience: Relevant commercial administration experience in Accounting, Finance, Engineering, or related disciplines. Site-based experience as a Contracts Administrator or Quantity Surveyor in the construction and engineering industry. Experience with a variety of project values and complexities. Understanding of document control and records management. Experience in negotiating with sub-contractors. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and exposure to a contract management system (CRM).
