About The Role

UNSW Planning and Performance (UPP) provides strategic analytical support to senior university leaders, focusing on business intelligence, forecasting, and performance analysis built on robust, reliable data. As a trusted source, UPP delivers insights that guide major initiatives and continuous improvement.

The Performance Analyst contributes to this mission by delivering complex data analysis, modelling, and projections to inform key decisions. The role supports university-wide education, research, finance, workforce, and strategy — and works collaboratively with other analysts to ensure consistent, systemised processes and modelling across the institution.

This role builds strong relationships with faculties and divisions to ensure timely, high-quality support and reports to the Manager, Strategic Performance. It has no direct reports.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:
  • Under broad direction, develop and deliver analytical services that inform business decision-making, monitor performance, support business improvement, planning processes and new initiatives in accordance with strategic priorities.
  • Partner with stakeholders at various levels across the university to deliver and analyse results and provide expert advice, insight and guidance on strategies, performance and initiatives.
  • Contribute to strategic research, benchmarking and data initiatives by participating in the development and implementation of frameworks, methodologies, standards and reporting processes.
  • Undertake research, modelling, scenario analysis, forecasting using both quantitative and qualitative methods to support business planning and performance monitoring.
  • Develop specialised dashboards, reports, presentations and recommendations to communicate complex analytical findings for various stakeholders, supporting informed decision-making.
  • Actively contribute to the development and maintenance of a culture of open collaboration, continuous review and improvement of business practices and tools, operational processes and service provision.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with relevant business units, internal teams and external stakeholders, and contribute to collaborative projects and cross-functional initiatives.

About You (Skills & Experience)
  • Advanced data wrangling and automation: Proficient in R or Python, with the ability to build robust, replicable, and automated data processes to support strategic decision-making.
  • Insightful communication and visualisation: Skilled in translating complex data into clear insights using tools like R/Python and Power BI, with strong written communication and flexibility in verbal delivery.
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline with experience in a similar role within a large and complex organisation or proven equivalent competency gained through any other combination of experience, education or training.
  • Demonstrated success in developing tools and implementing processes to monitor organisational performance including data collection and reporting of both University and Faculty / Divisional KPIs.
  • Demonstrated experience working with large structured and unstructured data sets, with the ability to model and analyse using applications such as SQL and Python or R, Excel and Databricks to draw insights and produce data visualisations in tools such as Power Bi.
  • Highly developed skills in quantitative and qualitative analytical research and statistical analysis techniques, expertise in scenario modelling, sensitivity analysis, correlation and regression analysis and the development and application of analytical business tools.
  • Proven communication, partnering and consulting skills including the ability to engage, influence and negotiate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated capacity to think and plan strategically with a demonstrated ability to be agile and innovative, while maintaining commitment to achieving outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative, work autonomously, prioritise effectively, meet deadlines and adapt positively to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment, working collaboratively in a multifaceted team.
