Assistant Commissioner and ATO General Counsel, Office of General Counsel - SES Band 1

We are seeking a leadership professional with strong legal, governance, and compliance skills for the role of Assistant Commissioner and ATO General Counsel, Office of General Counsel.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate an extensive understanding of legislative, regulatory, and compliance frameworks to ensure proper interpretation and application of the law.

This role reports directly to the ATO's Chief General Counsel & Deputy Commissioner, Integrity Assurance and Law.

The successful candidate will provide expert, tailored, and contemporary legal services to support decision-making and manage legal risks within the ATO, aligning with ATO priorities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing general law risks
  • Providing in-house legal services across areas such as administrative law, FOI, privacy, taxpayer confidentiality, monetary claims, employment law, commercial law, and corporate governance
  • Oversight of non-tax disputes and leading the management and resolution of non-tax claims and litigation against the ATO
  • Supporting involved employees

The incumbent will be responsible for the operations of the Office of General Counsel and is expected to enhance the delivery of in-house legal services.

Priorities include providing exceptional legal advice, developing strategies to mitigate risk, and enhancing the overall performance of the Office of General Counsel.
