Job Description

As a Medical Officer at TAL, you will provide evidence-based reviews of customer medical information during underwriting and at the time of claim. Your role involves supporting and coaching claim staff and underwriters to interpret and obtain relevant, specific medical information for assessing new business applications or claims.

As a subject matter expert with experience reviewing underwriting applications and claims, you will provide medical insights and analysis of information to a wide range of stakeholders across TAL. This includes supporting the review and development of medical definitions, processes, guidelines, training, and contributing to new health-related initiatives across the customer lifecycle.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Conduct timely reviews and provide feedback on individual underwriting applications and claims related to medical factors.
  • Offer efficient, evidence-based recommendations concerning medical information or the need to seek medical information, considering customer experience, regulatory compliance, and business requirements.
  • Support liaison with treating parties and reinsurers on specific cases when required.
  • Represent the Medical Team in business-as-usual engagements with assigned business units, maintaining a good working relationship between the two departments.
  • Provide insights and data on health-related factors observed during medical reviews to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and guide the health strategy for the aligned business unit and across TAL.
  • Engage effectively with TAL's Chief Medical Officer on complex medical matters and, when necessary, consult with external medical specialists.
  • Support the review and development of medical definitions, guidelines, and training as needed.
  • Analyse medical data to support pricing assumptions when required.
  • Collaborate effectively with other Medical Officers to manage workloads and implement activities that ensure efficient and effective medical support to stakeholders.
  • Work with the broader Health Services team to guide health strategy across the TAL business, including preventative health, health support, health processes, and TAL's overall health proposition.
  • Report and manage risks identified during day-to-day activities.
Qualifications
  • A medical degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience in clinical practice.
  • Strong clinical reasoning skills, especially the ability to make well-reasoned and evidence-based choices in a timely manner.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work to meet commitments aligned with team goals.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and operate with agility. Commitment to continuous improvement in operational processes.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences and strong influencing skills to gain the support and commitment of others.
  • Ability to create connections and work towards joint goals. Preference to work interdependently and the ability to support others in proactively identifying issues and opportunities to resolve them collaboratively.
  • Displays resilience and maintains a positive attitude when facing difficult situations.
  • Treating others fairly and equitably, managing differences of opinion respectfully, and actively participating in activities that build high team performance.
  • Actively seeking new ways to grow and develop personal skills, knowledge, and behaviour in support of individual and team goals.

You're always accountable for your actions. You never give up. You strive to find the best outcomes for customers and partners. And you value working together to find the best solutions for problems.

As part of the recruitment process, there are a number of checks which may be conducted to demonstrate your eligibility for a role at TAL including Criminal History, Bankruptcy, Entitlement to Work, Regulatory and Reference Checks.
