Let's talk about the role and responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled and forward-thinking SCOM Administrator and Support Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) administration, providing L2/L3 support for monitoring environments, and bringing thought leadership to help us drive innovation in monitoring and observability across the organization. You will be a critical member of the team in improving the reliability, performance, and observability of our IT infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • SCOM Administration & Configuration:
    • Manage, administer, and maintain System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), ensuring optimal performance and availability.
    • Configure, deploy, and optimize SCOM management packs and agents for monitoring diverse infrastructure components, including servers, applications, databases, and networks.
    • Regularly perform system updates, patching, and troubleshooting to ensure SCOM is aligned with the best practices.
  • L2/L3 Support:
    • Provide L2/L3 support for monitoring tools, troubleshooting complex issues, and resolving escalations from L1 support teams.
    • Work collaboratively with infrastructure and application teams to identify, diagnose, and resolve SCOM-related incidents and service requests.
    • Proactively monitor and ensure high availability of systems, working to prevent downtime or system degradation.
  • Monitoring & Observability Strategy:
    • Lead and drive the thought leadership around monitoring and observability practices, including recommending the adoption of new tools, technologies, and methodologies.
    • Continuously assess existing monitoring and observability strategies, and recommend forward-thinking improvements or automation to improve data collection, reporting, and alerting.
    • Evaluate new trends and technologies in the monitoring space and advocate for cutting-edge solutions to enhance overall infrastructure visibility.
  • Collaborative Leadership:
    • Partner with cross-functional teams (DevOps, infrastructure, and security) to design, implement, and optimize comprehensive monitoring strategies across the enterprise.
    • Assist in the design and implementation of proactive monitoring processes for cloud-native and hybrid environments.
    • Ensure best practices are followed in the design and deployment of monitoring solutions, enhancing overall operational efficiency.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    • Maintain comprehensive documentation for SCOM configurations, system architecture, monitoring dashboards, and incident management processes.
    • Develop reports and visualizations that provide actionable insights into system performance and availability.
    • Provide regular reporting to management regarding the health and performance of critical systems, highlighting any gaps in monitoring or observability.

  • 5+ years of experience working with SCOM administration, including setup, configuration, and ongoing management.
  • Proven experience providing L2/L3 support for enterprise-scale monitoring solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of monitoring principles and observability frameworks, including how to optimize alerting, reporting, and logging.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based monitoring solutions (e.g., Azure Monitor, AWS CloudWatch) and hybrid cloud environments is a plus.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expertise in SCOM management packs, agent configuration, and tuning.
    • Strong experience with PowerShell scripting for automation and SCOM management.
    • In-depth knowledge of Windows Server, SQL Server, and application-level monitoring.
    • Familiarity with Performance Tuning, Capacity Planning, and Fault Management in monitoring systems.
    • Experience with network monitoring tools (e.g., SNMP, WMI) is beneficial.
  • Certifications:
    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator or Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect (preferred).
    • ITIL or relevant certifications in IT operations (preferred).
  • Soft Skills:
    • Excellent problem-solving abilities and the ability to troubleshoot complex monitoring issues.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated ability to influence and drive forward-thinking solutions that advance monitoring and observability practices.
    • A proactive, self-motivated approach with a strong desire for continuous learning and improvement.
