Housing Support Care Aide Role

The Housing Support Care Aide participates directly in identifying clients' problems, needs and risks. They provide support with basic life skills building in problem areas, engage residents in services and programs, and advocate for them towards independent living.

Key Responsibilities

Resident and Program Needs:

  • Contributes to resident support/care plan development and modification. Provides input to Island Health teams and detox/treatment program plans.
  • Develops short-term intervention plans within program guidelines. Implements one-on-one support and collaborates with outside agencies as needed.
  • Evaluates intervention plan effectiveness and reports client progress. Discusses concerns with the Supervisor to resolve identified problems and move towards objectives.
  • Builds rapport and professional relationships with residents.
  • Performs wellness checks with other Housing Support Workers.
  • Assists residents at mealtimes and distributes personal hygiene supplies.
  • Maintains mobility aids and assists residents with activities like room cleans.
  • Encourages independent action in daily living activities such as dressing, laundry, bathing, and grooming.
  • Participates in social and therapeutic activities for residents.
  • Gathers information relevant to clients' problems, needs and risks through interviewing and observation.
  • Maintains resident files, log notes, and provides reports on unusual behavior or physical changes.
  • Assists with laundry and maintains on-site laundry rooms.
  • Supports residents in developing independent life skills.
  • Stays informed about laws and legislation affecting residents.
  • Utilizes de-escalation skills to mitigate challenging situations.
  • Maintains professional boundaries while displaying empathy and compassion.
  • Responds to medical emergencies and provides first aid as needed.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite knowledge.
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention techniques and harm reduction approach.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services available to residents.
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative and creativity.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Physical ability to perform duties of the position.

Qualifications

Education and Knowledge:

  • Nursing Assistant Program graduation or equivalent. Current BC Care Aide and Community Registration.

Training and Experience:

  • A minimum of one year recent related experience.

Working Conditions/Compensation:

Shifts: Part time, Sunday to Monday, 1pm to 9pm

Compensation: $31.56 to $33.49 per hour, plus 5% in lieu of paid holidays.

Benefits: Vacation is accrued at a rate of 6% or in accordance with your length of service as per the collective agreement (Article 18.1). Access to our EAP (Employee Assistance Program).

This position requires union membership.
