Nominees for Chair are exceptional and recognised leaders with a demonstrated passion in improving the health and wellbeing of Australians. Applicants from all Australian jurisdictions are encouraged to apply.
Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Individuals are selected based on the individual expertise and experience they will bring to the role. They are not appointed to represent the views or position of a specific organisation or institution.
You will bring experience and knowledge that ensures that AMRAB collectively possesses expertise in the following fields:
- medical research;
- policy relating to health systems;
- management or delivery of health services;
- medical innovation;
- financing and investment;
- consumer issues relating to health.
Current AMRAB members and their expertise can be found here.
The AMRAB is responsible for:
- determining the Australian Medical Research and Innovation Strategy (the Strategy) and the Australian Medical Research and Innovation Priorities (the Priorities); and
- advising the Health Minister about other matters that the Health Minister refers to the Advisory Board.
The Strategy is determined every 5 years, and the Priorities are determined every 2 years. The Minister for Health and Aged Care takes the Priorities into account when making decisions in relation to grants of financial assistance to support research and medical innovation from the MRFF.
Under new arrangements to reform the Australian Government's investment in health and medical research, AMRAB will work closely with the NHMRC Council to improve alignment and coordination of NHMRC's Medical Research Endowment Account (MREA) and the MRFF administered by the Department of Health and Aged Care.

- Attend and contribute to AMRAB meetings unless prior notice of absence is provided.
- Provide independent, expert advice to support the development and implementation of the Australian Medical Research and Innovation Strategy and Priorities.
- Provide expert advice on MRFF issues as directed by the Minister, either in meetings or through out-of-session papers.
- Engage and consult with stakeholders to make sure that MRFF investments focus on the best areas for future research.
- Seek advice from the joint NHMRC-MRFF Advisory Committees to support its core functions.
- Advisory Board members cannot be recipients of MRFF grant funding during the period of their appointment.
- This does not apply to existing MRFF grant agreements that span the period of their appointment.
- Maintain confidentiality in line with the Medical Research Future Fund Declaration of Interest Policy Statement.
What is the time commitment?
Starting in 2025, AMRAB will hold joint meetings with the NHMRC Council. As a guide, meetings may occur 3 or 4 times per year for 1 day or 2 full days at a time. Meeting preparation involves reading and considering agenda papers in advance of the meeting and may include preparing materials or presentations. The AMRAB Secretariat can provide support in the preparation of materials and presentations. Additional briefings and out-of-session meetings may be required as directed by the Chair and Deputy Chair.
The Chair and Deputy Chair are also expected to hold monthly online meetings for up to one hour with the Chief Executive Officer, Health and Medical Research Office, Department of Health and Aged Care.
Where and when are meetings held?
Meetings may be held via videoconference or in person.
