Base pay range

A$71,808.00/yr - A$76,022.00/yr

The office of Senator Dean Smith is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Media and Communications position (Electorate Officer A), based in the Senator's Electorate Office in Perth, WA.

A commencing salary between $71,808 and $76,022 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills with an additional optional allowance of up to $22,368 as per the employment conditions outlined below.

This role would suit a proactive candidate with proven experience in journalism, communications or politics.

The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to:

  • Provide quality, timely media and communications advice, including after hours or on weekends where required.
  • Manage a multi-platform communications plan aimed at maximising media exposure, building social media following and presenting portfolio and Parliamentary work.
  • FPOC for all media enquiries.
  • Proactively identify and pursue media opportunities, and maintain working relationships with media outlets.
  • Build and maintain a media contacts distribution list.
  • Manage social media accounts, including planning and producing high quality, creative content.
  • Website management, including regular uploading of content.
  • Daily media monitoring.
  • Accompany Senator Smith on travel and to events as required, including outside business hours or on weekends, and to Canberra for all sitting weeks.
  • Preparation for media interviews, press conferences and other events.
  • Content gathering, including producing and editing photographs and videos, and graphic design work.
  • Draft media releases, talking points, event briefs, speeches and other written material.
  • Research, write and pitch opinion pieces and other stories.
  • Plan and build regular email blasts and other digital communications.
  • Coordinate office advertising campaigns.
  • Other duties as directed.

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications and experiences:

  • A tertiary qualification in journalism, communications or politics, with work experience in a related role.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to produce high quality communications materials, including written and visual content – with written material prepared to final draft stage.
  • Ability to multitask and respond to rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Ability to think creatively and work proactively to achieve maximum results.
  • Ability to manage effective relationships with media outlets and stakeholders.
  • Capacity to source and analyse complex data and legislation, including liaising with the Parliamentary Library and other resources.
  • Strong Microsoft Office, graphic design and video editing skills, and familiarity with digital communications platforms including MailChimp and Klaviyo.
  • Interest in Government/politics. Experience in this field is welcome, but not a requirement.

Employment conditions:

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:

  • A commencing salary between $71,808 and $76,022 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
  • An additional optional allowance of up to $22,368 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).

A probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.
