About the Role

TheITS Design Engineerposition reports to theTeam Leader, Asset Compliancewithin theTransport Systems Branch. This role is responsible for reviewing and providing expert advice on a range of internal and external project designs—spanning both minor and major works. A key focus will be on collaborating with stakeholders across the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP), as well as industry partners, to deliver outcomes that support the state's transport objectives.

The ITS Design Engineer supports the Asset Compliance team by ensuring visibility of project deliverables and aiding delivery teams in achieving acceptance for ongoing maintenance. The role involves working with roadside electrical assets such as traffic signals, street lighting, and intelligent transport systems, while collaborating with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across DTP, MTIA, and industry partners.

This is a technically focused role, ideal for someone who is naturally inquisitive, solution-oriented, and confident in negotiating with stakeholders to drive positive project outcomes.

  • Review and provide advice– Various minor and major project designs delivering traffic signals, street lighting, Managed Motorway Arterial ITS, and any other on-road electrical assets for compliance acceptance by ITS Asset Management section. The focus is for ongoing maintenance effectiveness and ease.
  • Relationships– Develop, enhance and leverage heathy relationships between ITS Asset Management section and internal and external stakeholders. This includes internal teams and groups, external projects, other Government departments, various private business partners and contractors within the ITS industry. Maintain effective working relationships in support of compliance of ITS standards and specifications, with a view to ongoing maintenance by DTP.
  • Negotiations– Negotiate and influence stakeholders to resolve project delivery issues related to the maintainability of ITS assets on the Victorian transport network.
  • Professional Judgment– Utilise professional judgement to ensure that relevant standards and specifications are met for delivery of traffic signals, street lighting, ITS and any other on-road electrical assets.
  • Occupational Health and Safety– Review and assess project related Occupational Health and Safety requirements and ensure compliance with DYP requirements and procedures. Ensure safety standards are met and there is minimal impact on the surrounding transport network.
  • Continuous Improvement– Work proactively with the leadership team and subject matter experts across the department to implement continuous improvement.
  • Safety– Promote and support safe, inclusive and flexible team operations.
  • In line with Section 31A of the Public Administration Act 2004 (Vic) other duties may be assigned consistent with employment classification, skills, and capabilities

Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory

  • Experience relevant to the demands of the role
  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering discipline
  • ITS Industry experience in design, delivery, or maintenance
  • Eligibility of corporate membership of the Institute of Engineers Australia would be highly regarded.
