The Role

As a postdoctoral researcher in Analytical Chemistry, you will work on the project "FAST CBRN," funded by DASA. The role involves developing methodologies for the analysis of pesticides in complex matrices using chromatography-mass spectrometry. This research is highly innovative and positioned at the forefront of analytical science, with results that have significant implications for the broader analytical and forensic sectors, the defence industry, and society.

Activities in this research position will include the analysis of pesticide mixtures using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) in samples of varying complexity. The role will involve preparing standards, developing methods, conducting both quantitative and qualitative analyses, and performing data treatment. The work will primarily take place in the laboratories at Kingston University (Penrhyn Road campus). A research placement of approximately two weeks in another laboratory is also planned. The applicant will be expected to prepare work for frequent project meetings with the team and the funding body, and should be willing to travel occasionally to conduct or present research

The post holder will assist in preparing research for reports and publications/outputs, in collaboration with colleagues and under the direction of the research leader. Active participation in collaborative decision-making with colleagues on research challenges within their area of expertise is expected. The work undertaken will contribute directly or indirectly to the development of the institution and its strategic research positioning.

The Person

You will apply your subject expertise in Analytical Chemistry to conduct research aimed at improving analytical approaches for protecting citizens, while also advancing the boundaries of the discipline—making a real impact on society. You should be a Chemist, or have a related background, with postgraduate studies (PhD) in Analytical Chemistry.

Hands-on experience in chromatography, preferably gas chromatography, is essential for this role. A solid understanding of mass spectrometry is also important, along with experience using a range of mass analyzers. An interest in statistics and data analysis would be an advantage. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about travelling, presenting their work, and writing reports and research publications.

We are seeking an ambitious individual with a strong interest in pursuing research, who can meet deadlines, enjoys reading and writing academic papers, is productive, overcomes difficulties, enjoys teamwork and is eager to exceed expectations.
