Privacy Counsel (Regulatory), APAC & Emerging Markets

Responsibilities

About the Team: Our legal team provides key support for all ByteDance's innovative initiatives, state-of-the-art products, and integrated platforms servicing our global video market. We help our technological and business teams enable their vision by providing integrated legal guidance and support. The ByteDance team is growing fast and is seeking highly experienced, bright and capable legal professionals to join the team. One of the critical challenges is the need for our team to provide exceptional legal support for the Data Privacy and Data Protection matters involving ByteDance. The following describes the responsibilities and requirements for the role.

  • Provide data privacy legal support in the APAC and Emerging Markets (AEM) region with a focus on managing regulatory matters for the entire company in over 120+ markets, including leading regulatory investigations, litigation, government policy, and external communications.
  • Monitor privacy across markets to determine trends and issues for the company to address.
  • Coordinate internal communication, projects, and training amongst different teams.
  • Identify areas of common concern, redundancies in operation, and inefficiencies to develop standards and policies to improve workflow in the region.
  • Plan activities so international and regional legal teams can meet objectives and provide actionable deliverables to the company at large.
  • Merge solutions across key jurisdictions and their legal requirements with a focus on AEM, while maintaining foundational knowledge of other global laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Advise on algorithmic and artificial intelligence-related matters as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified to practice law and in good standing in Australia, the US, the UK, or another common law jurisdiction.
  • Significant experience managing privacy legal and regulatory matters.
  • Experience working on data privacy efforts globally/regionally for a major multinational corporation or advising agency on data privacy issues.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to coordinate across multiple teams and countries.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and proactive work ethic.
  • Determination to face tough challenges in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a sense of humor.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internationally recognized data privacy certifications or courses are advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead/manage data privacy efforts globally/regionally.
  • Experience and personal interest in technology, social networks, the internet, and digital topics.
  • Experience leading highly contentious and complex regulatory issues.
