Retrieval & Emergency Medicine Advanced Trainee (0.5 FTE each) – Full-Time Temporary (1.0 FTE)
Join the largest Local Health District in NSW as part of a dynamic team at John Hunter Hospital a Level 6 tertiary referral, major trauma, and teaching hospital. This is a fixed-term full-time opportunity, split equally between Retrieval and Emergency Medicine (0.5 FTE each).
John Hunter Hospital, located in the Hunter New England Local Health District, is the region's largest hospital, with over 650 beds and growing. We proudly serve a diverse population of more than 900,000 people across the Hunter, New England, and Lower Mid North Coast. Our strong academic and research partnerships include close collaboration with the Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle.
As the only trauma centre in NSW outside the Sydney metropolitan area, John Hunter Hospital also houses the state's busiest Emergency Department. Our team delivers both primary and tertiary trauma care to the Hunter Valley and provides tertiary trauma services to the Central Coast, New England, and Mid North Coast regions.
The Hunter Retrieval Service (HRS) has been delivering critical inter-hospital retrieval services for over 25 years. Teams include a senior intensive care nurse alongside a Consultant or Senior Trainee in Emergency, Anaesthetics, or Intensive Care. In coordination with NSW Ambulance paramedics, HRS provides high-level medical care at pre-hospital scenes (e.g. motor vehicle accidents) and during complex inter-hospital transfers. HRS also plays a crucial role in statewide rescue operations including Search and Rescue and helicopter winch missions.
This dual-role position is ACEM-accredited, fulfilling requirements for Emergency Medicine Training and Special Skills Training. The successful applicant will rotate between the Retrieval and Emergency roles in two-week blocks. Shifts are scheduled across a 24/7 roster.
Where you'll be working
Newcastle is the second-largest city in New South Wales, offering a relaxed lifestyle and a lower cost of living compared to Sydney. Set along a stunning coastline and network of estuarine lakes, the city boasts average commute times of just 20 minutes. It is conveniently located: approximately two hours by car from Sydney, one hour by air from Melbourne, 40 minutes from the renowned Hunter Valley wine region, and 90 minutes from the beginning of the NSW North Coast.
The region also features world-class universities, high-quality primary and secondary schools, and excellent sporting and recreational facilities, all while maintaining strong professional, academic, and global connections.
While your primary base will be in the Hunter Region, work with the Retrieval Service will extend to rural and regional pre-hospital locations (e.g., roadside emergencies) and smaller peripheral hospitals. Transport modalities include both road and rotary wing. Key locations include John Hunter Hospital and the Belmont Helicopter Base.
