About the Role

Applications are invited for an advanced psychiatry registrar with a specific interest in psychotherapy to join the Psychotherapy Department at St Vincent's Health Melbourne for a one-year specialised training placement.

This is an accredited training position funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health under the Specialist Training Program. The registrar's clinical work will take place both in public settings within St Vincent's Mental Health Service and in the private sector, primarily at a psychotherapy-oriented clinic adjacent to St Vincent's Hospital on Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

The registrar will be expected to deliver psychodynamic psychotherapy in each of the settings. Opportunities for individual, family, and group psychotherapy are anticipated. The registrar is encouraged to attend formal educational courses related to developing specialised psychotherapy skills.

Expert supervision will be provided for each psychotherapeutic modality the registrar engages in, along with participation in reflective groups and seminars.

An expectation is that the successful applicant will contribute to the on-call roster at St Vincent's Mental Health.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery or equivalent

Registration with the AHPRA or eligibility for general registration

Registration as a medical practitioner

About the Mental Health Department at St Vincent's Hospital

St. Vincent's Mental Health (SVMH) emphasizes strengths and recovery opportunities for individuals with mental health issues, acknowledging cultural diversity and trauma, fostering resilience, and supporting recovery. SVMH includes adult mental health services for the Yarra and Boroondara areas.

Trainees have access to a range of specialist experiences, including dual diagnosis, Aboriginal mental health, trauma psychiatry, psychotherapy, perinatal psychiatry, psycho-oncology, liaison psychiatry, old age psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry. Rotations include Austin Health, Eastern Health, and private practices at Gertrude Street Clinic for child and adolescent mental health.
