Purpose of the Position
This position is responsible for the provision of full-time counselling and academic guidance to students presenting with a range of needs, along with offering referrals, pastoral care, and support of the SCEI-HE's Mental Health Strategic objectives. The support will include a variety of issues that support students' and teachers' welfare, personal, work and study needs. This role is also responsible for the development, implementation and management of the student intervention strategy designed to identify, assist, educate and motivate students.The Counsellor/ Student Engagement Officer must ensure confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriateness of service for adult students.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Become conversant with SCEI-HE policies and involved in their review, revision and implementation
- Adhere to the higher education policies informed by ASQA/TEQSA and the Higher Education Standards Framework
- Work with leadership to monitor and implement higher education risk management mitigation strategies for students' wellbeing.
- Provide general advice to students regarding a variety of issues, dilemmas and or problems related to course progress, personal problems, accommodation, workplace relations, job search / career etc.
- Develop and maintain appropriate documentation of counselee appointments
- Conduct regular welfare and progress checks.
- Liaise with the Head of Department and other colleagues to ensure that students are supported even during their work placement visits and follow up with those who do not complete the standard hours or does not meet the requirements of the course.
- Keep up to date with legislation, government policy changes and key TEQSA directives that affect the way SCEI-HE is required to comply
- Prepare the requisite templates, forms, brochures and relevant procedures that would be supportive of students' welfare, work, academic and personal needs.
- Creating and filing of relevant student documents
- Assisting staff to support students appropriately
- Report on common themes and implement preventative strategies
- Actively contribute to ensuring an emotionally safe environment for students and staff
- Other general duties as required
- The ability to work independently, a willingness and capacity to take initiative and to manage a full counselling caseload
- Ensure strict client confidentiality and share information with management and/or teachers ONLY where appropriate
Student Intervention
- Liaise with and participate in regular meetings with academic staff to identify, assist, educate and motivate students who are not meeting course progress requirements outlined in Southern Cross Education Institute's policies & procedures
- Implement and maintain intervention strategy including all supportive documentation. This includes contacting at risk students via telephone, text message and email every second week until satisfactory course progress has been achieved
- In conjunction with trainers set (new) reasonable academic time limits for at risk students
- Ensure trainers identify at risk students regularly via the 'Academic Check Progress Register' and send 'Academic Warning Letters' according to Southern Cross Education Institute's 'Academic Progress Policy'
Qualifications and skills:
- Tertiary qualification/training in counselling, mental health, psychology or social work
- Registration with the appropriate professional regulatory organisation for your profession (Psychology Board of Australia (provisional or full), membership with the Australian
- Association of Social Workers or clinical membership with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, or similar regulatory agency)
- 3 years' experience in providing counselling services addressing emotional and/or behavioural needs to At-Risk students
- Demonstrated knowledge of current VIC Child Protection Legislation
- Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development and mental health issues
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to work collaboratively within a team and engage with multiple stakeholders
- Experience working with young adults/students
- Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
