About the team
The Skin Cancer Prevention team works to change social environments and individual behaviours to reduce the risk of skin cancer and improve the health and wellbeing of people living in NSW. The team does this by providing information and resources to increase community understanding of cancer prevention, and by developing innovative programs and services in the settings where people live, work, learn and play.
About the role:
The key purpose of this role is to lead the scoping, development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based skin cancer prevention projects and programs to reduce UV-related harm in NSW. The priority settings of interest include sport and recreational settings, and workplaces. The Lead will utilize their subject matter expertise and ability to engage stakeholders to strengthen collaborative relationships, influence decision-makers and drive strategic results.
Key responsibilities of the role:
- Develop and maintain an up-to-date and expert knowledge of skin cancer prevention literature and related issues.
- Horizon scan emerging issues in skin cancer prevention through monitoring peer-reviewed and grey literature, trends in the sector and through stakeholder networks.
- Identify evidence gaps and apply theoretical approaches and conceptual thinking to scope new strategic approaches to skin cancer prevention initiatives.
- Develop and implement methodologies and approaches that guide program delivery and evaluation to track progress and support decision making.
- Hold and develop high level relationships and build partnerships with key stakeholder groups and represent CCNSW on matters relating to skin cancer prevention.
- Strategically engage with key stakeholders, peak bodies and thought leaders across the priority sectors of work health and safety, built environment and sport, to strengthen their engagement and support for skin cancer prevention initiatives.
- Build effective working relationships with key internal stakeholders, by providing relevant, contextualized and priority-driven advice to inform program and service delivery outcomes.
- Effectively communicate complex skin cancer related information, research and data to diverse audiences with tailored and, where appropriate, localised reports, briefs and presentations.
- Work in collaboration with CCNSW colleagues on coordinated and strategic approaches to evaluation and the application of evidence into program and policy improvements.
- In conjunction with the Evaluation Unit, develop evaluation plans to assess the impact and effectiveness of Cancer Council NSW's skin cancer prevention initiatives.
- Lead the development and implementation of research, policy, advocacy and/or communication projects that strengthen the delivery of skin cancer prevention initiatives.
- Undertake research and provide advice &/or briefings – both written and verbal – to Cancer Council management and other key stakeholders regarding skin cancer prevention research, policies and best practice.
- Draft reports and publishable journal articles relating to skin cancer prevention programs and initiatives.
- Prepare submissions to secure funding for Cancer Council NSW's skin cancer prevention initiatives.
- Contribute to the strategic and operational plans of the Skin Cancer Prevention Unit.
- Lead, manage and support your direct reports to be a high performing team.
- Provide leadership and support to project officers to build their project management, research and communication skills.
- Set up systems to support achievement of performance objectives, staff development and retention.
- Manage and support volunteers and student interns to increase the capacity of the Skin Cancer Prevention Unit.
About you
- Tertiary qualifications in health promotion/public health or related discipline.
- Excellent conceptual thinking and critical appraisal skills, including the ability to interpret and translate evidence and data into strategic program delivery and policy planning.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategies to achieve specific health promotion objectives, particularly in the context of influencing public policy, health systems, or population-based behavioural change programs within priority settings.
- High level written and oral communication skills, including the preparation of strategic documents and reports.
- Advanced project management skills.
- Proven ability to communicate complex or scientific information in simple form to non-technical audiences, and to deliver effective verbal presentations.
- Strong influencing and negotiation skills with senior internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a professional team to deliver results.
- High level of initiative with the ability to work independently, manage projects with tight deadlines and competing demands.
- High level computer competency, particularly with word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
- Demonstrated skills in working as part of a team as well as undertaking self-directed work.
- Masters of Public Health degree or other relevant post-graduate qualification.
- Qualifications/experience in skin cancer prevention strategies.
- Experience in managing and developing staff and volunteers to achieve their objectives.
- Experience in working with the education, work health and safety, built environment &/or sport sector in the design and delivery of programs.
- Understanding of cancer epidemiology.
- Previous publication track record.
- Community engagement experience.
