Research Associate

Overview

Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Consumer Energy Resources (x2 positions) at UNSW. The School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering (SPREE) invites applications for a Research Associate (Level A) or Senior Research Associate (Level B) to join a team collaborating with industry partners and researchers across UNSW via the Collaboration on Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM).

Responsibilities

• Contribute to one or more projects using energy systems data analysis and modelling.
• Develop open-source tools (e.g., in Python, R, Matlab or Excel) to support the energy transition of Consumer Energy Resources (CER).
• Handle and analyse large real-world CER datasets (rooftop PV, batteries, EVs).
• Query and manipulate large datasets from multiple databases/platforms (AWS, SQL, Azure).
• Develop algorithms to analyse CER compliance according to Australian standards (AS 4777.2020.2, CSIP-AUS, IEEE).
• Develop algorithms to analyse CER curtailment under relevant standards and the Emergency Backstop Mechanism (EBM).
• Develop open-source tools to assist DNSPs and network operators in CER operation management and planning.
• Create data visualisations to understand CER value and address emerging challenges with higher CER penetration in distribution networks and at the system level.
• Engage with industry partners through regular meetings, presentations and industry reports.

Qualifications

Applicants must have valid working rights in Australia. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Level A – Research Associate

• A PhD or equivalent research experience in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
• Experience in technical and economic modelling of renewable generation or distributed energy resources (storage, demand-side participation) including aspects of energy user behaviour, distribution network implications, and integration into electricity industry operation or planning.
• Expertise in analysis and modelling using large energy-related data sets; formal statistical analysis and use of AI techniques such as pattern recognition and machine learning.
• Desirable: experience with development and management of large energy datasets.
• Independent, proactive researcher with ability to drive projects and seek innovation opportunities; ability to work in a team across disciplines.
• Interest or experience in developing open-source modelling tools for broader stakeholder use.
• Desirable: experience interacting with electricity networks, market institutions and distributed energy businesses in Australia.
• Commitment to staying up-to-date with discipline developments and demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality independent research with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated research outputs (publications and conference presentations) relative to opportunity.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse stakeholders and students.

Level B – Senior Research Associate

• All Level A qualifications (as above) with additional requirements as follows:
• Demonstrated track record of high-quality and high-impact research outcomes and capacity for research leadership.
• Significant involvement with the profession and/or industry; strong practice of maintaining open-source code repositories.
• High-level communication and networking skills; ability to work with a diverse range of staff and students.
• Ability to build networks with colleagues and generate funding or industry projects through external liaison (local and international).

Salary and Conditions

• Level A (Research Associate): AUD$113,911 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation
• Level B (Senior Research Associate): AUD$127,947 to $150,830 per annum + 17% superannuation
• Full time
• Fixed-term contract – Until December 2027
• Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia
