The Role
We are seeking a qualified insurance lawyer to work as part of the underwriting team. The position considers complex indemnity questions, guides the team on how to respond to breaches of duty, provides input into complaints involving underwriting decisions and advises on a range of other related legal issues as they emerge. The position oversees the policy wordings and briefing policy drafters.

Key Deliverables and Responsibilities:

  1. Respond to indemnity questions in a timely fashion ensuring that all decisions on policy coverage are made in good faith and in accordance with laws and the authorities set out in the Underwriting Manual.
  2. Review and interpret legal documents, contracts, and agreements to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  3. Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to develop and implement underwriting policies and procedures.
  4. Provide legal advice and support to the underwriting team on complex cases and claims and relevant remedies.
  5. Stay updated on industry trends, legal developments, and regulatory changes affecting underwriting practices.
  6. Engage with all stakeholders and make recommendations for changes to the policy wordings in conjunction with the external Policy drafters.
  7. Assist with handling of complaints and submissions relating to Underwriting decisions.
  8. Provide internal training on the insurance legal framework and any changes or relevant case law from time to time.
  9. Maintain the Underwriting manual.
  10. Review marketing collateral or other product related documents to ensure underwriting intent is reflected accurately.
  11. Support other Underwriting functions as required.
Skills and Experience
  1. Has practiced as a lawyer in the field of insurance law for 3 years.
  2. Ideally has worked within an Insurance company for 3 years, preferably within an underwriting function or claims function.
  3. Ability to think strategically and practically.
  4. Comfortable in making commercial decisions.
  5. Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  6. Effective communication skills.
  7. Adaptable and flexible in approach.
  8. Highly organised and able to prioritise workloads.
Formal Qualifications
  1. Bachelor of Law (LLB).
  2. The candidate will ideally possess insurance industry qualifications at Certificate IV level or higher.
  3. RG146/Tier 2 qualification.
