Harmony is the largest gold producer by volume in South Africa and is a significant operator of gold tailings retreatment facilities. In Papua New Guinea, Harmony owns and operates the Hidden Valley mine and owns 50% of the Tier 1 Wafi-Golpu copper-gold project. Harmony is currently preparing to progress the Execution Phase of the Eva Copper Mine Project in Queensland, Australia.
Reporting to the Group Manager – Commercial, the Payroll Team Leader will lead the end-to-end payroll function and staff associated with the processing of all payroll transactions and payments. You will play a pivotal role in overseeing payroll operations and compliance, including supervision of two direct reports.
This role will be offered for a period of 12 months; however, as this is a temporary replacement for an existing employee, the duration may be reduced with a 2-month notice period or potential redeployment opportunities may be available within the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the team and perform the end-to-end payroll across multiple entities (Australia and PNG) ensuring accuracy and on-time delivery for over 1000+ staff.
- Oversee payroll operations, including payroll calculations, deductions, taxes, and compliance with relevant legislation.
- Develop and implement payroll policies, procedures, and best practices to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
- Conduct regular audits to ensure data accuracy and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor correctness, eligibility, and timeliness of payments in terms of Awards, EBA's, Employment Contracts, organisational policies, and other relevant legislation.
- Oversee and monitor annual projects such as the issue of performance payments.
- Assist in the design and implementation of enhancements to Harmony's payroll system and procedures.
- Stay updated with changes in payroll regulations and industry trends to ensure compliance and best practices.
- Supervise payroll staff including training and development and performance reviews.
- Liaise with internal and external auditors.
- Ensure accurate preparation of workers' compensation returns, payroll tax returns, and group tax reconciliations.
- Oversee the efficient preparation of management reports based upon information within the payroll system.
- Resolve/answer queries relating to payroll across the company in a timely and professional manner.
- Ensure compliance with BIC internal control requirements.
About You:
- A minimum of 10 years' experience in Payroll, with previous leadership experience and the ability to manage a team.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Payroll, Finance or Accounting are desirable.
- Knowledge of legislative requirements in respect of PAYG, FBT, payroll tax and EEO principles.
- Sound understanding of Industrial Award / Enterprise Agreements, organisations payroll system and salary grades.
- Sound knowledge of computerised payroll system (Pronto or similar systems).
- Strong leadership ability, excellent communication and well-developed interpersonal skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
