Mechanical Engineer – Heatherbrae, NSW
The role
This role is part of our team focused on the development and overhaul of products within the business unit of Global Products – Mechanical Cutting. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will participate in all phases of the product lifecycle – from design and technical support to workshop and field assistance – with a particular focus on RTV equipment.
Areas of responsibility
- Lead the design, development, and support of mechanical cutting equipment, with a focus on the RTV product line.
- Prepare and review 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using CAD software (e.g. Siemens NX, SolidWorks).
- Maintain machine Bills of Materials (BOMs) and Teamcenter (TC) data.
- Prepare hydraulic schematics and support system-level design documentation.
- Conduct complex engineering calculations and simulations to validate mechanical designs.
- Ensure all engineering activities comply with Australian mining legislation, WHS regulations, and Sandvik's internal policies.
- Liaise with NSW and Qld mining regulators and certification bodies to ensure timely Mine Design Registration amendments and approvals and compliance with explosion protection standards.
- Conduct and validate engineering calculations and simulations to ensure design integrity and safety.
- Lead prototype builds, testing, and validation activities, ensuring alignment with project timelines and quality standards.
- Develop and review technical documentation, manuals, and compliance reports.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in design, safety, and product performance.
- Support issue resolution in workshop and field environments, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- This position supports the Mechanical Cutting Division and provides indirect supervision as well as professional guidance to the Junior Mechanical Engineer, within a broader collaborative team structure.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams including product management, field service, manufacturing, and supply chain.
- Contribute to risk assessments, safety audits, and technical reviews in accordance with AS4024 and other relevant standards.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional to join our dynamic team. You hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent tertiary qualification and bring at least five years of hands-on experience with flameproof underground equipment. You have demonstrated expertise in Australian and international explosion protection standards (including AUS/NZ Standards, MDG, and Recognised Standards), with a particular focus on diesel engine systems.
You possess strong technical expertise, including the ability to interpret engineering requirements, develop mechanical systems using 3D CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX, SolidWorks), and perform engineering calculations and simulations. You have a solid foundation in mechanical principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes.
You are structured, hands-on, and driven by a passion for delivering practical, safe, and innovative solutions. Your experience with heavy mobile equipment and strong interest in supporting product improvements from design through to field deployment are essential.
You also have an in-depth understanding of safety and regulatory compliance, including Australian engineering standards, mining equipment safety legislation, WHS regulations, and safety considerations throughout the design and operational phases. In addition, you are familiar with underground mining operations and the specific challenges associated with mechanical cutting systems.
You have a thorough understanding of the product development lifecycle, from concept through to field support, including design validation and technical documentation. Your ability to create and maintain comprehensive safety and technical documentation (manuals, bulletins, compliance reports) ensures the highest standards of quality and safety.
Finally, you are committed to knowledge sharing and actively contribute your expertise to internal and external stakeholders. Your strong analytical and problem-solving skills enable you to proactively identify technical issues and develop practical, engineering-based solutions.
