About the Position:
This position plays a key role in leading conservation research and scientific analysis to support the care and management of Museum Victoria's collections.
Main Responsibilities:- Conducting materials characterization, hazard identification, and preservation-focused research to ensure the long-term stability, safety, and accessibility of the collection.
- Developing strategies that enhance collection development, public access, and ongoing conservation practices.
- Initiating, developing, and managing conservation research projects and performing advanced technical analysis of collection materials using specialised analytical equipment.
- Undertaking applied research to improve materials analysis techniques and their relevance to the preservation and access needs of the collections.
- Interpreting and communicating analytical results to curators, conservators, and other stakeholders, including guidance on hazard management and preservation strategies.
- Maintaining data integrity and standardising analytical protocols and procedures.
- Managing the laboratory's equipment, systems, records, and administration in alignment with museum standards.
- Contributing to the planning and management of resources, facilities, and budgets within the conservation science team.
- Adhering to organisational policies, safety standards, and legislative requirements, including handling hazardous materials in controlled environments.
- SPECIALIST TRAINING IN AND DEMONSTRATED EXPERIENCE WITH A RANGE OF ANALYTICAL EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES RELEVANT TO CULTURAL HERITAGE MATERIALS.
- EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND MATERIALS CHARACTERISATION WITHIN MUSEUM OR HERITAGE COLLECTIONS.
- DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION SCIENCE PRINCIPLES, ETHICS, AND RESEARCH RELEVANT TO MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLECTIONS.
- SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMICAL HYGIENE, LABORATORY SAFETY, AND COMPLIANCE WITH SAFE WORK PRACTICES.
- STRONG ORGANISATIONAL AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT ABILITIES WITH PROVEN CAPABILITY TO MANAGE MULTIPLE PRIORITIES AND MEET DEADLINES.
- PROFICIENCY IN MAINTAINING ACCURATE DOCUMENTATION USING ELECTRONIC DATABASES AND MUSEUM RECORD SYSTEMS.
- EXCELLENT VERBAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS, WITH THE ABILITY TO PRESENT SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION CLEARLY AND STRATEGICALLY TO DIVERSE AUDIENCES.
- WILLINGNESS TO UNDERGO A NATIONAL POLICE RECORDS CHECK AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.
