
Aboriginal Cultural Mentor and Support Officer

Aboriginal Cultural Mentor and Support Officer (Maternity Relief) – Charlestown, NSW. The role provides direct assistance to staff, children and families to enable culturally appropriate support and delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in our care, with a primary focus on sustaining identity, belonging to family, community and culture.
Responsibilities- Directly support staff, children and families to improve stability and cultural connection of children and young people.
- Collaborate with families, children, staff and carers to develop a cultural plan that meets individual needs and supports its implementation to enhance belonging.
- Identify and locate extended family connections and facilitate re-engagement with extended families and kin; liaise with Aboriginal communities.
- Provide mentoring to connect children and young people with family, culture and community.
- Assist staff, families and children in identifying communities of origin, connection to country and mob.
- Assess needs of families and children for flexible, specialised support with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
- Support care within family, residential and carer settings in line with the child's cultural background.
- Keep staff, carers and families informed about events, programs and activities in local Aboriginal communities.
- Promote understanding of Aboriginal culture and its impact on social and emotional development and well‑being.
- Assist in linking young people back into their communities and families; follow Allambi risk assessment procedures.
- Participate in case planning meetings with families, Government Departments and Indigenous clients; review progress of cultural care plans with management and staff.
- Maintain case notes and files per Allambi policies; collaborate with Indigenous services and government departments; maintain external service relationships.
- Assist management with referrals to programs that support positive outcomes, including camps and other activities to strengthen community and land connections.
- Act professionally in all cases; liaise with appropriate services to develop inter-agency protocols; attend camps and outings in a leadership capacity; participate in management-nominated training.
- Prioritise and complete tasks in line with client needs and company demands, adhering to timeframes; assist staff with family finding and reconnection efforts.
- Work independently and as part of a team; educate staff on impacts of colonisation and related policies and practices; promote practical initiatives to enhance Aboriginal cultural awareness.
- Build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Current Working with Children Check (for paid employment).
- Current First Aid Certificate (Provide First Aid; HLTAID011).
- National Police Check.
- A current driver's licence and a vehicle capable of transporting four or more people; comprehensive car insurance.
- Ability to follow protocols and individualized programs for young people; willingness to participate in pre-employment medical checks.
- Two work-related references; recognition by local Indigenous groups.
- Working knowledge of youth work; experience with Microsoft Office; understanding of Needs Based Restorative Framework concepts.
- Desirable qualifications: Diploma of Community Services; Bachelor of Human Services; or a Bachelor qualification in a relevant field; willingness to undertake/study these qualifications.
