The Australian Energy Council (AEC) is the peak industry body for electricity and downstream natural gas businesses operating in the competitive wholesale and retail energy markets.AEC members generate and sell energy to over 10 million homes and businesses and are major investors in renewable energy generation. The AEC supports reaching net-zero by 2050 as well as a 55 per cent emissions reduction target by 2035 and is committed to delivering the energy transition for the benefit of consumers.
We are looking for an expert to join our Wholesale and Environment policy team. This is a full-time position. The AEC is a flexible workplace, providing an opportunity to work remotely, with an expectation that the successful candidate would be based in one of the NEM capital cities. Some interstate travel would also be required.
The Opportunity
This pivotal role within the AEC involves the development and implementation of the Council's policy advocacy, with a specific focus on Australia's electricity and gas markets.You will play a crucial role in shaping energy market policy, providing advice to both internal and external stakeholders, and driving the AEC's strategic priorities.
Key Responsibilities
As the Energy Markets Policy Manager, you will be responsible for:
- Developing and implementing energy market policy positions for the AEC, including producing timely submissions and policy papers.
- Analysing and anticipating emerging energy market policy from governments, regulators, and other bodies, and developing appropriate policy responses in consultation with the AEC executive and members.
- Managing the Wholesale Markets Working Group and facilitating the development of consensus policy positions among members.This includes preparing agendas, papers, taking minutes, and coordinating action items.
- Representing the AEC at energy market policy meetings, consultation sessions, and other forums.
- Providing energy market policy advice and leading the development of related advocacy material.
- Building strong and meaningful relationships with key decision-makers and external stakeholders to influence outcomes and explore collaboration opportunities.
- Working closely with members to prioritise and develop external policy positions on critical issues, ensuring members are informed of policy developments and potential outcomes.
- Drafting editorial and other external communications on key policy issues.
- Providing key supportive role for the GM Wholesale and Environment.
What We Are Looking For
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- Deep knowledge of energy markets (electricity and gas).
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with excellent written and verbal communication abilities to develop compelling messages and engage diverse stakeholders.
- Research and analytical skills, including the ability to conduct research, analyse data, and draw conclusions for effective advocacy, along with skill in data analysis techniques and presentation tools.
- Problem-solving skills to effectively address stakeholder relationship, policy, and communication challenges.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Adaptability and flexibility to thrive in a dynamic environment and adjust to changing priorities.
- Understanding of policy-making processes – how policies are developed and implemented is crucial for effective advocacy.
- Prior experience in advocacy or related fields is highly desirable.
