Master Plumbers Association – Canberra ACT (MPA) is the region's professional association representing employers and self-employed individuals engaged in the Plumbing industry. This includes the activities of plumbing, draining, gasfitting, roofing and irrigation, as well as the provision of services and materials for these industries.
MPA is represented at the national level by Master Plumbers Australia & NZ (MPANZ), which includes representatives from the various State and Territory Master Plumbers Associations.
MPA operates under a Code of Ethics. It expects all members to operate in a professional manner in the interests of the industry and the wider community. MPA also has a strong interest in sustainability and ensuring members play a constructive role in this area.
The role works closely, in a collaborative manner, with a volunteer Board of Directors who represent members and the plumbing industry.
The Chief Executive Officer is required to:
In conjunction with the Board, and in close consultation with the President, develop strategic plans and ensure their implementation as far as possible.
In conjunction with the Board, and in close consultation with the President and Treasurer, develop annual and related budgets and manage all financial activities of MPA.
Ensure that all necessary governance and legal requirements are adhered to – such as relevant requirements under the Incorporations Act, insurances, staff management etc.
Continually review the delivery of services to members and actively recruit new members.
Organise events that assist members to develop and maintain effective businesses.
Ensure the creative and efficient organisation of major MPA functions such as World Plumbing Day, charity events and the Plumbing Industry Excellence Awards.
Develop strong working relationships with industry stakeholders, including members, sponsors and associates, government and utilities, training providers, unions and advisory boards on matters affecting the Plumbing Industry.
Ensure creative communication and PR activities to members and the broader community including production of the bi-monthly e-newsletters and media releases in order to raise the profile and reputation of the industry.
Represent MPA at relevant internal and external meetings and functions.
Ensure effective mediation regarding complaints from members of the public against members, and where necessary implement the Consumer Guarantee Scheme for positive outcomes.
Prepare for and attend all regular meetings of MPA, (Members and Executive Meetings) and other meetings as appropriate, take minutes and be responsible for follow up actions.
Work with existing business partners to ensure that mutual benefits are delivered from the arrangements and continually explore new ways of working together for positive outcomes. Explore additional sponsorship and business partnership opportunities and develop other fundraising initiatives.
Ensure that relevant correspondence is responded to in a timely and professional fashion.
Ensure that all necessary governance and legal requirements are adhered to – such as relevant requirements under the Incorporations Act, insurances, staff management etc.
Other duties as required by the Board as the Constitution allows.
Selection Criteria
Well-developed management and organisational skills, with the initiative and motivation to work independently.
Extensive experience and skills in public relations, communications, and marketing.
Demonstrated analytical skills and sound judgment including the ability to think strategically.
High level of representational skills and the ability to work with stakeholders at all levels.
Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to develop productive working relationships and negotiate with a diverse range of organisations.
A good understanding of workplace health and safety and workplace participation principles and the ability to apply these in the workplace.
Current Motor Vehicle Licence.
Previous experience in a membership organisation.
Knowledge of the plumbing industry.

One position, an Office Manager, answers to this role – as well as contactors such as bookkeeper and the Awards event coordinator.
Role reports to:
The CEO reports directly to the Board of MPA.
