Central Australian Women's Legal Service (CAWLS) is a dynamic Community Legal Centre catering to women in Central Australia and the Barkly Region, with offices in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. Specialising in assisting women affected by Domestic and Family Violence, CAWLS adopts a holistic and culturally safe approach, offering services such as law reform, legal representation, client support, financial counselling, and community legal education.

About the Opportunity

Central Australian Women's Legal Service (CAWLS) is looking for a full-time Civil Lawyer/Solicitor based in Alice Springs, NT, on a 2-year contract.

This role provides legal advice, representation, and holistic support to CAWLS clients across a range of civil law matters. The role reports to the Senior Management Team and contributes to the overall success of the organisation.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Providing legal advice, representation, and referrals across areas including family law, domestic violence, tenancy, and employment
• Representing clients in courts and tribunals, including as a duty lawyer
• Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to deliver holistic, trauma-informed support
• Participating in outreach work, including occasional remote travel
• Delivering community legal education and building legal literacy
• Building partnerships and engaging with community-based organisations
• Participating in law reform and advocacy projects
• Maintaining legal files, reports, and administrative compliance
• Undertaking professional development and contributing to internal staff training

About You

To qualify, you will need to be eligible to hold a Practising Certificate in the Northern Territory. A minimum of 2 years of post-admission experience in an Australian legal practice is also essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

• Experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and/or First Nations backgrounds
• Knowledge of general civil law matters, particularly Domestic and Family Violence
• Prior experience in Community Legal Centres and familiarity with the CLASS database
• Strong understanding of legal, economic, and social issues affecting women in Central Australia

Please note: This is a female-identified position under Sections 30 and 34 of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984. You must also hold (or be eligible to obtain) a current NT Driver's Licence, Ochre Card, and National Police Check.
