Speech Pathologist – Lithgow
We are seeking a speech pathologist to conduct face-to-face speech therapy sessions in Lithgow for children impacted by homelessness and/or domestic and family violence. The speech pathologist will receive referrals directly from our service provider, Lithgow Community Projects, and commence delivery of services in October 2025, concluding June 2026*. Competitive remuneration will be offered to the successful candidate, including meal allowance, backfilling, fuel and travel allowance (if required).
BackgroundLanguage development is a key component of early childhood development. Family violence has a direct impact on a child's developing language with brain abnormalities in the areas of memory and language. Deficits have been observed in vocabulary, fluency, expressive and receptive language, listening, mutism, social discourse and symbolism (Yehuda, 2005) in children who have experienced domestic and/or family violence.
Traumatic childhood events have also been shown to lead to brain abnormalities in the areas of memory and language.
Speech therapy helps children understand language, build vocabulary, use sentence structure and grammatical concepts, improve social skills, practice pronouncing different types of sounds, play skills, literacy and fluency of speech.
This program will service children who have been impacted by homelessness and/or domestic and family violence and have been referred by Lithgow Community Projects who deliver homelessness and housing support, including a specialist response to women and children experiencing domestic and family abuse.
Priority access will be provided to clients residing in and/or being supported by services in Lithgow.
Who can apply?Suitable experienced and qualified speech pathologists in our region, or service providers that employ speech pathologists based within their organisation, with capacity to provide outreach services one day a month in Lithgow. The speech pathologist is required to:
- hold relevant qualifications in speech pathology, including evidence of current Speech Pathology Australia registration
- hold current professional indemnity insurance
- have a current NSW driver's licence
- have a recent Police Check and Working with Children Check
