The opportunity
  • Apply your genome analytics expertise in cutting-edge health research projects
  • Exciting role within a supportive team, with opportunity to work remotely

The Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) is CSIRO's digital health research unit delivering innovation to the health system. As technology and data volumes surge to improve our understanding of health and life sciences, the medical industry faces unprecedented challenges. Therefore, as Australia's largest eHealth research group, we are at the forefront of developing pioneering bioinformatics solutions for research and industry.

Our researchers in the 'Transformational Bioinformatics' group use cutting-edge cloud-native genomics for health research. Joining this wider group as a Research Projects Officer, you will be a key part of our dynamic 'Genome Insights' team, which focuses on building novel digital products that leverage new technologies in cloud computing and machine learning. These products deliver translational impact in the fields of precision medicine, environment, and agriculture across academic, government, and commercial sectors.

In this multi-faceted role, you will work closely with internal and external stakeholders in the areas of both precision population and environmental genomics. You will apply your genome analytics and statistical genetics domain knowledge to evaluate new bioinformatics technology for the annotation and prioritisation of clinically relevant genomic variants and develop novel research approaches for multi-omic analysis, as well as tackling other emerging issues.

If you enjoy working in a collaborative team and contributing to work that creates real impact, this exciting role presents a great platform to further enhance your skills and experience.

Applications will be assessed across two capability levels, and the successful candidate will be appointed at the level commensurate with their skills and experience. More details are outlined in the Position Description.

Your duties will include:
  • Developing and evaluating innovative concepts, theories, tools, and techniques related to genomic data analysis, genomic variant prioritisation, population and environmental genomics, and pharmacogenomics.
  • Under supervision, designing, developing, and adapting experimental methods and systems, software, and/or user experience, requiring high levels of initiative, ingenuity, and skills (some of which are outside a single discipline).
  • Developing novel techniques to produce enhanced results, providing researchers with new or improved approaches to research or technological problems.
  • Addressing problems promptly and in a constructive manner.
  • Participating in work which is highly involved due to unique or unusual features and complications, requiring the creation of original user experiences, the design & development of original technologies, and/or the development of original experimental or observational techniques and insightful interpretation of data.
  • Actively contributing to communicating research or technological results in internal and external forums and, where applicable, contributing to and/or generating scientific papers.

Location: Adelaide SA; Brisbane QLD; Canberra ACT; Melbourne VIC; or Sydney NSW

  • Evidence of advanced data analytics and programming capabilities in more than one language relevant for bioinformatics (e.g., Python, Java, C++, Scala, BASH, R, Julia).
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
