This is an exceptional opportunity to play a pivotal role in supporting the safety and efficiency of Australia's railways by ensuring robust financial and payroll management and compliance. As a Finance Officer at ONRSR, you will be part of a respected national regulator that values independence, respect, integrity, diligence, and excellence.

You will enjoy working in a collaborative environment where your attention to detail and commitment to best practice are highly valued. Your ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, meeting tight deadlines and attention to detail while upholding the highest professional standards will be essential. In this role, your proactive approach to process improvement will help drive efficiencies within the finance team while ensuring adherence to best practices. Your day-to-day activities will include:

  • Undertaking comprehensive accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled in line with organisational standards.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of ONRSR's Enterprise Agreement and payroll legislation to effectively undertake end-to-end fortnightly payroll, while administering other aspects of the payroll function including superannuation, ATO, payroll tax and workers' compensation requirements.
  • Responding to a wide range of queries from staff in a timely and supportive manner.
  • Supporting the efficient and smooth onboarding of new staff.
  • Managing the corporate credit card function by reconciling statements, issuing cards and maintaining complete records for audit purposes.
  • Reconciling general ledger accounts on both monthly and annual cycles to ensure accuracy and compliance with Australian Accounting Standards.
  • Contributing to revenue processes by raising invoices, managing debtors, and supporting revenue collection activities across the organisation.
  • Assisting in preparing periodic GST, FBT, and other statutory returns while providing guidance on related queries to employees at all levels.
  • Participating in year-end financial procedures under the direction of senior finance staff, including responding to internal and external audit requests as required.
  • Contributing to ongoing review and maintenance of finance policies, procedures, guidelines, and work instructions in alignment with ONRSR's financial framework.
  • Ensuring timely processing and secure storage of all financial records according to ONRSR's information management framework.

What you bring:

To excel as a Finance Officer at ONRSR, through your technical qualifications and at least three years' experience in a comparable role you will bring:

  • Demonstrated understanding of contemporary accounting processes and procedures relevant to Australian organisations, including confidence in using modern finance platforms and tools.
  • Proven experience managing complex payroll processes within an Australian context including timesheet processing, leave management, and personnel data updates through to managing bank, superannuation and single touch payroll submissions.
  • Experience completing month-end/year-end close procedures such as journal entries, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations, and supporting documentation preparation.
  • Practical knowledge of GST and FBT return preparation along with the ability to assist staff members with their related queries.
  • Excellent data literacy and analysis skills combined with strong problem-solving abilities that enable you to identify discrepancies or areas for improvement within financial systems.
  • Sound organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to calmly manage competing deadlines while delivering accurate results under pressure.
  • A service-oriented attitude focused on supporting colleagues across all levels of the organisation through clear communication and reliable assistance.
