The First Nations Health Unit is led by the Unit's Director Aboriginal Health. The Unit consists of a First Nations Health Liaison Officer (FNHLO), First Nations Clinical Nurse Support Officers, a workforce coordinator and finally, a Bioethicist, all of whom are covering inpatient and outpatient services, workforce improvements and education and research.

Responsibilities
  • Help assess, plan, provide and coordinate First Nation patient and consumer care.
  • Develop & maintain strong relationships with the Aboriginal Community, Aboriginal Organisations, and community providers.
  • Perform and support nurses to perform culturally safe interventions and procedures in accordance with Indigenous best practice and RMH policies & procedures.
  • Assist with clinical interpretation for other FNHLO team members.
  • Provide quality patient focused care to First Nations patients and their carer as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Develop strong internal networks and relationships to improve the delivery of care to First Nations Cancer patients, within and external to the organisation, including participation in relevant meetings.
About You
  • Have a sound knowledge of and understanding of First Nations culture, society, and kinship networks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in and commitment to the provision of First Nations health services in a mainstream health, primary care, or welfare sectors.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, oral, and written health communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain strong links across the acute health and emergency care sector as well as community and government providers.
  • A deep understanding of state and local First Nations Health issues and initiatives.
  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (or equivalent) or willingness to attain relevant qualifications.
