Provide timely, efficient, high quality and cost-effective Anatomical Pathology diagnostic and consultation services to meet the clinical needs of referrers statewide. Assist in the development and implementation of frameworks and strategies to continue the development of the state-wide Anatomical Pathology service as a single functional entity based on universal best practice and reflected through uniform standards and practices. Assist in the supervision of registrars.

This role will actively participate in discipline-specific meetings, laboratory/department meetings, and/or multidisciplinary team meetings as determined in consultation with clients. A permanent full-time role; however, part-time hours may be considered. The advertised role will report to the Medical Director Townsville Laboratory and the Statewide Director Anatomical Pathology (based at RBWH) either directly or through appropriate reporting lines.

PQ is critical to the delivery of healthcare in Queensland and with a multidisciplinary team of 2,000 people, we're involved in 70 percent of all medical decisions and in all cancer diagnoses. With a strong research and clinical improvement culture, we also support more than 450 point-of-care testing devices, extending access to care in more places.

Key competencies (role specific criteria):

  • Demonstrated contemporary knowledge, skills, and ability in Anatomical Pathology, participate in the frozen section service, perform MDTs, and be able to participate in an after-hours on-call roster, and a high level of professionalism required in the position, especially objectivity.
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills necessary for all aspects of the position.
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to conduct relevant training, teaching, research, investigation, analysis, and management.
  • Knowledge of the ISO 15189 and NATA Medical Testing Requirements demonstrating continued accreditation in your clinical specialty for all laboratories across a diverse network.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements:

  • Mandatory requirements are a medical qualification and tertiary qualification in Anatomical Pathology (FRCPA, or equivalent) and be registerable with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) as a Specialist Pathologist.
  • The incumbents must be Fellows of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia or equivalent.

On top of a generous base salary, medical practitioners also receive additional allowances including motor vehicle, professional development, and retention and attraction (50% of base salary). In Townsville, a locality allowance and rural retention and attraction allowance also apply (5% of base salary) to form the total salary.
