About The Equal Opportunity Commission

When you join the Equal Opportunity Commission, you become part of a people-focused organisation, working hard to make our community free from discrimination and prejudice. The Commission offers an inclusive and flexible workplace where employees have the chance to make a difference to equality in Western Australia.

The Equal Opportunity Commission supports the Commissioner for Equal Opportunity in administering the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (EO Act), as amended.

About The Role

The Education and Engagement Officer will play a pivotal role within the Strategy, Engagement and Education (SEE) services. The Strategy, Engagement and Education team develops and delivers engagement and education strategies that raise awareness about the EO Act and how it addresses unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation in Western Australian. These strategies include the use of instruments such as publications, the website, social media, events, education sessions and fee-for-service training for organisations.

In this you role, you will be responsible for assisting in the provision of the Commission's engagement and education initiatives that are used to inform individuals and groups about the EO Act, and how it and other relevant legislation shapes people's rights and obligations in relation to discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

Key Responsibilities Of The Role Include
  • Researching, developing and implementing engagement and education strategies to increase awareness and understanding of the existence, functions and services of the EO Act.
  • Delivering and facilitating engaging education and training sessions for public, private, and not-for-profit organisations, as well as the broader community, to promote awareness and compliance with the EO Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Actively engaging with and consulting community groups to understand and incorporate lived experiences of equal opportunity issues, ensuring programs and initiatives are informed, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.

This role requires a dynamic and knowledgeable individual with an understanding of equal opportunity principles and the impacts of discrimination and harassment. The ideal candidate will be skilled in researching and developing effective education strategies and resources, and confident in delivering engaging sessions to diverse audiences using adult learning principles. Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—are essential, along with the ability to tailor messaging to suit varied cultural and accessibility needs. A collaborative approach and a genuine commitment to promoting equal opportunity, as well as an interest in human rights, are key to success in this role.
