This role will be a job share arrangement.

West Beechboro Primary School is an Independent Public School catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our school is culturally diverse and educates students from many backgrounds.

We offer a variety of integrated learning programs. While literacy and numeracy are priority areas, science, technology, arts and humanities are interwoven to ensure students receive a holistic, well-balanced, education. Our staff continually review our teaching framework to ensure consistent learning and communication is delivered to the school community.

The Role

The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) is a support role that assists teachers in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This role develops and maintains relationships both inside and outside of the school community and acts as an advocate for students and caregivers to ensure our school is a culturally safe environment for everyone.

The AIEO acts as a liaison between the community and school to develop and maintain an educational program relevant to both educational and cultural needs as well as relationships with community stakeholders. They also provide mentoring and pastoral care to encourage participation and achievement at school, and provide support and advice to schools and teachers on the management program of students at risk. They also design and implement behaviour management plans, maintain records, and provide information to parents.

Additionally, the AIEO facilitates community contribution to the formulation of school policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, conducts interviews or home liaison visits, manages class resources, and assists with preparation and maintenance of the learning environment. The AIEO works with small groups of students to support academic progress and social and emotion wellbeing.

    • Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact on a range of levels in a variety of settings and with different audiences, including community members, teaching and other professionals.
    • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a school-level team and to provide multi-cultural direction in the development of the educational program, development of language resources, and evaluation of education and behaviour management programs.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing educational and behaviour management programs.
    • Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
    • Demonstrated ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.
