Brisbane, Queensland, Australia BOQ Group Full time
Senior Legal Counsel, Business Bank Regulatory

Join to apply for the Senior Legal Counsel, Business Bank Regulatory role at BOQ Group.

We're seeking a commercially minded and technically skilled Senior Legal Counsel, Business Bank Regulatory to join our team. In this role, you'll provide transactional and regulatory legal advice across a diverse range of banking and finance activities to support multiple brands and business units, including BOQ Business Bank, BOQ Specialist, BOQ Finance, and BOQ Financial Markets.

You'll play a key role in supporting strategic initiatives that strengthen, simplify, digitise and optimise our operations. This role involves a broad range of activities including, but not limited to:

  • Structuring and settling banking and finance transactions.
  • Providing advice on legal and regulatory requirements, including under the Corporations Act, ASIC Act and BCOP.
  • Legal support for regulatory projects, including projects to address bank initiatives to minimise regulatory risk and to respond to new legislative or regulatory requirements.
  • Commercial, quality and timely legal advice on such matters as marketing and promotional activities, advice on credit and financial products, mandatory breach reporting and customer remediation.

You'll work closely with internal stakeholders across distribution, product, credit, risk and compliance, as well as external law firms, regulators, and industry bodies.

Qualifications

You're a qualified legal practitioner in Australia (6-8 years PQE), experience ideally gained in private practice or in-house within the banking and finance sector. You bring:

  • Strong technical legal skills and a practical understanding of banking and finance transactions and familiarity with equipment finance including novated leasing, as well as structured and dealer finance products.
  • Experience advising on SME business structures and foundational knowledge of property, corporate and trust law. You will be comfortable finding solutions to settle transactions and advising on PPSA and PEXA related issues.
  • A practical working knowledge of key legislation, rules, codes of practice and guidance, including the Corporations Act, ASIC Act, Privacy Act, Banking Code of Practice and AML/CTF Act. This entails an understanding of the responsibilities and approach of key regulators (ASIC, APRA and AUSTRAC).
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to build trust with stakeholders by delivering clear, tailored legal advice.
  • Confidence in leading complex transactions and projects with minimal supervision.

We operate in a highly regulated, fast-paced environment so we are seeking a strategic thinker who can problem-solve in a variety of situations and timeframes. This will require you to have sound judgement in decision making and strong advisory skills, supported by the ability to consider commercial outcomes. Your time management skills will always be displayed; you are organised and have the ability to prioritise and meet tight deadlines.

If you're passionate about delivering high-quality legal support in a dynamic banking environment, even if you only have some of the experience and knowledge listed above, we'd love to hear from you.
