New Ph.D Position/ Doctoral Candidate Recruitment

We are currently seeking highly motivated research candidates to join two innovative, industry-partnered projects at Dr. Nam Nghiep Tran's Research Group, School of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology, The University of Adelaide. These positions are fully funded and open to candidates interested in pursuing either a PhD or a Master's by Research, depending on academic background and experience.
The projects are aligned with global sustainability goals and industrial innovation in carbon capture, CO₂ valorisation, and green fertiliser formulation. The successful candidate will play a central role in delivering impactful scientific outcomes with real-world application potential.
Project Streams Available:1. Integrated Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) for Value-Added Chemical Production
You will work on the full CCUS chain, from CO₂ capture and purification, through to chemical conversion, and ultimately into process design, optimisation, and pilot-scale validation.
2. Chitosan-Based Controlled-Release Fertiliser Development
You will develop biopolymer-based fertiliser systems using chitosan extracted from bio and marine waste, focusing on formulation, characterization, and performance evaluation under agronomic conditions.
Qualifications:- Conduct independent and collaborative research aligned with the selected project stream
- Design experiments, perform simulations, and analyse experimental or modelling data
- Develop and validate process models using tools such as ASPEN Plus, COMSOL, and ANSYS Fluent
- Engage in laboratory-scale synthesis and characterisation of materials (where applicable)
- Participate in regular meetings with academic and industry supervisors
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals
- Contribute to pilot-scale planning, testing, and reporting
- Present research findings at local and international conferences
Required:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
- CGPA ≥ 3.5 out of 4.0 or 6.0 out of 7.0 (or equivalent academic standing)
- At least one first-author research article in a Q1-ranked peer-reviewed journal (non-review)
- Proficiency in at least one process modelling or simulation software (e.g., ASPEN Plus, COMSOL, ANSYS)
- Strong research writing and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a research team
Preferred:
- Experience with chitosan extraction, biopolymers, or materials formulation
- Knowledge of analytical techniques (e.g., FTIR, SEM, TGA)
- Previous participation in pilot-scale or industry-linked R&D projects
- IELTS Academic score of 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (or equivalent PTE score)
