What To Expect…

Having completed the first year of your apprenticeship is required. You will continue your Certificate III Bricklaying/Blocklaying qualification as a 2nd Year Refractory Bricklaying Apprentice through a combination of formal training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and practical on-the-job experience with Zeal Futures and Host Employer, BlueScope.

Throughout your formal training and practical experience in the workplace, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Reline ladles for iron and steel making vessels using bricklaying and refractory installation techniques
  • Carry out refractory installation and repairs of Blast Furnace troughs
  • Spray refractory materials using gunning techniques
  • Follow Standard Procedures to ensure safety and quality standards are met
  • Learn to operate forklifts and overhead cranes through in-house and external training

  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Successful completion of 1st year Bricklaying Apprenticeship
  • High physical fitness due to the tasks involved
  • Willingness to work rotating shift patterns
  • Commitment to the full term of the apprenticeship and study requirements
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ongoing commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement principles

During your apprenticeship, you'll be employed by Zeal Futures while completing on-the-job training with Host Employer BlueScope, located in Port Kembla.

In Australia, it is the largest steelmaker, producing 3.2 million tonnes of steel annually at Port Kembla Steelworks, supplying vital products for infrastructure, building, and renewable industries.
